About the Basque Country
The Autonomous Community of the Basque Country -Euskadi- is one of 17 regions that make up the Spanish state. It is a small territory, similar in size to the state of Rhode Island (USA), the metropolitan area of Lille (France) or the Rhine-Ruhr region in Germany.
Its Alpine terrain is combined with 246 kilometres of coastline, alternating between spectacular cliffs and fine sand beaches. The Basque Country has managed to preserve its ancestral culture, its language and its character down through history.
The Autonomous Community of the Basque Country is divided into 3 historic territories: Alava, Bizkaia y Gipuzkoa. The administrative capital of the Basque Country is Vitoria-Gasteiz; however, Bilbao is the biggest city in the region. Donostia-San Sebastián is the best-known tourist destination.
