Por su parte los corcirenses, al informarse de estos preparativos, se llenaron de miedo, y como no estaban ligados por tratado alguno a ninguna ciudad griega, ni se habían hecho inscribir ni en el pacto ateniense ni en el lacedemonio, les pareció lo más conveniente ir y hacerse aliados de los atenienses e intentar obtener de ellos ayuda.

À la nouvelle de ces préparatifs, les Corcyréens prirent peur, car ils n'avaient pas d'alliés en Grèce et s'étaient tenus jusqu'ici en dehors de la ligue athénienne comme de la ligue lacédémonienne. Ils décidèrent donc de s'adresser aux Athéniens pour conclure une alliance avec eux et essayer d'obtenir du secours.

The Corcyraeans, alarmed at the news of their preparations, being without a single ally in Hellas (for they had not enrolled themselves either in the Athenian or in the Lacedaemonian confederacy), decided to repair to Athens in order to enter into alliance and to endeavour to procure support from her.

Il faut ensuite donner l'assurance d'une ferme reconnaissance.

when a people that have not rendered any important service or support to their neighbours in times past, for which they might claim to be repaid, appear before them as we now appear before you to solicit their assistance, they may fairly be required to satisfy certain preliminary conditions. They should show, first, that it is expedient or at least safe to grant their request; next, that they will retain a lasting sense of the kindness.
