Tanto más lícito es restar de ella una presunta utilidad, considerada, de todos modos, por la conciencia popular como la más esencial,-la fe en la pena, hoy vacilante por múltiples razones, sigue encontrando todavía su apoyo más firme precisamente en tal utilidad.

Raison de plus pour en soustraire une utilité prétendue, que pourtant la conscience populaire tient pour la plus essentielle,-la foi dans le châtiment, qui aujourd'hui vacille pour diverses raisons, ne laisse pas de trouver dans cette utilité son soutien le plus puissant.

This makes it all the more permissible to eliminate one supposed utility, which passes, at any rate in the popular mind, for its most essential utility, and which is just what even now provides the strongest support for that faith in punishment which is nowadays for many reasons tottering.
