On raconte d'eux aussi le trait suivant. Les Argiens célébraient une fête en l'honneur de Junon. Il fallait absolument que leur mère se rendît au temple sur un char traîné par un couple de boeufs.

Both equally had won prizes in the games, and moreover the following tale is told of them:-There was a feast of Hera among the Argives and it was by all means necessary that their mother should be borne in a car to the temple.

Comme le temps de la cérémonie pressait, et qu'il ne permettait pas à ces jeunes gens d'aller chercher leurs boeufs, qui n'étaient point encore revenus des champs, ils se mirent eux-mêmes sous le joug ;

But since their oxen were not brought up in time from the field, the young men, barred from all else by lack of time, submitted themselves to the yoke and drew the wain, their mother being borne by them upon it; and so they brought it on for five-and-forty furlongs, and came to the temple.

Eta biltzar osoaren begi-bistan hau eginda gero, bizi-amaierarik bikainena gaineratu zitzaien.

"Habiendo dado al pueblo que a la fiesta concurría este tierno espectáculo, les sobrevino el término de su carrera del modo más apetecible y más digno de envidia;

et tirant le char sur lequel leur mère était montée, ils le conduisirent ainsi quarante-cinq stades jusqu'au temple de la déesse.

Then after they had done this and had been seen by the assembled crowd, there came to their life a most excellent ending;

queriendo mostrar en ellos el cielo que a los hombres a veces les conviene más morir que vivir.

Après cette action, dont tonte l'assemblée fut témoin, ils terminèrent leurs jours de la manière la plus heureuse, et la divinité fit voir par cet événement qu'il est plus avantageux à l'homme de mourir que de vivre.

and in this the deity declared that it was better for man to die than to continue to live.

Izan ere, argostar gizonek, gazteak inguratuz, indarrarengatik zoriontzen zituzten; emakumeek, berriz, hauen ama, honelako semeak zituelako. Eta ama, eginaren eta esanaren pozez gainezka, jainkosaren irudi aurrean zutik jarririk, otoi egin zion, handiki ohoratu zuten Kleobis eta Biton bere semeei, gizonak lor zezakeen gauzarik bikainena eman ziezaiela.

Porque como los ciudadanos de Argos, rodeando a los dos jóvenes celebrasen encarecidamente su resolución, y las ciudadanas llamasen dichosa la madre que les había dado el ser, ella muy complacida por aquel ejemplo de piedad filial, y muy ufana con los aplausos, pidió a la diosa Juno delante de su estatua que se dignase conceder a sus hijos Cleobis y Biton, en premio de haberla honrado tanto, la mayor gracia que ningún mortal hubiese jamás recibido.

Les Argiens assemblés autour de ces deux jeunes gens louaient leur bon naturel, et les Argiennes félicitaient la prêtresse d'avoir de tels enfants. Celle-ci, comblée de joie et de l'action et des louanges qu'on lui donnait, debout aux pieds de la statue, pria la déesse d'accorder h ses deux fils Cléobis et Biton le plus grand bonheur que pût obtenir un mortel.

For the Argive men were standing round and extolling the strength of the young men, while the Argive women were extolling the mother to whose lot it had fallen to have such sons; and the mother being exceedingly rejoiced both by the deed itself and by the report made of it, took her stand in front of the image of the goddess and prayed that she would give to Cleobis and Biton her sons, who had honoured her greatly, that gift which is best for man to receive:

Otoi honen ondoren opaldu eta ospakizuna burutu zutenean, gazteak, santutegian bertan lotara etzanik, inoiz gehiago ez ziren jaiki; aitzitik, amaiera hori izan zuten.

Hecha esta súplica, asistieron los dos al sacrificio y al espléndido banquete, y después se fueron a dormir en el mismo lugar sagrado, donde les cogió un sueño tan profundo que nunca más despertaron de él.

Cette prière finie, après le sacrifice et le festin ordinaire dans ces sortes de fêtes, les deux jeunes gens, s'étant endormis dans le temple même, ne se réveillèrent plus, et terminèrent ainsi leur vie.

and after this prayer, when they had sacrificed and feasted, the young men lay down to sleep within the temple itself, and never rose again, but were held bound in this last end.

Eta argostarrek hauen irudiak eginarazi eta, gizonik bikainenak bailiran, Delphosen sagaratu zituzten".

Los argivos honraron su memoria y dedicaron sus retratos en Delfos considerándolos como a unos varones esclarecidos."

Les Argiens, les regardant comme deux personnages distingués, firent faire leur statue, et les envoyèrent au temple de Delphes. "

And the Argives made statues in the likeness of them and dedicated them as offerings at Delphi, thinking that they had proved themselves most excellent."

32. Beraz, Solonek hauei eman zien bigarren postua dohatasunean.

XXXII. A estos daba Solón el segundo lugar entre los felices;

32. Thus Solon assigned the second place in respect of happiness to these:

Orduan Kresok, egonezinez, "Athenastar arrotza!

oyendo lo cual Creso, exclamó conmovido:

" Athénien, répliqua Crésus en colère, faites-vous donc si peu de cas de ma félicité que vous me jugiez indigne d'être comparé avec des hommes privés ?

and Croesus was moved to anger and said:

-esan zion-, gu gizasoil horien duin ez egiteraino ezesten al duzu gure dohatasuna?". Eta hark erantzun:

-"¿Conque apreciáis en tan poco, amigo ateniense, la prosperidad que disfruto, que ni siquiera me contáis por feliz al lado de esos hombres vulgares?

-Seigneur, reprit Solon , vous me demandez ce que je pense de la vie humaine :

"Athenian guest, hast thou then so cast aside our prosperous state as worth nothing, that thou dost prefer to us even men of private station?" And he said:

"Oi Kreso, jainkoa bekaizti eta aztoratzaile dela dakien honi galdetzen diozu giza arazoen berri.

-¿Y a mí, replicó Solón, me hacéis esa pregunta, a mí, que sé muy bien cuán envidiosa es la fortuna, y cuán amiga es de trastornar los hombres?

ai-je donc pu vous répondre autrement, moi qui sais que la Divinité est jalouse du bonheur des humains, et qu'elle se plaît à le troubler ?

"Croesus, thou art inquiring about human fortunes of one who well knows that the Deity is altogether envious and apt to disturb our lot.

and these seventy years give twenty-five thousand and two hundred days, not reckoning for any intercalated month.

Then if every other one of these years shall be made longer by one month, that the seasons may be caused to come round at the due time of the year, the intercalated months will be in number five-and-thirty besides the seventy years;

Hirurogeita hamar urteen baitan diren hogeita sei mila berrehun eta berrogeita hamar egun guztiotatik, ez dio batak besteari erabateko berdina den gertakizunik luzatzen.

Pues en todos estos días de que constan los setenta años, y que ascienden al número de veintiséis mil doscientos y cincuenta, no se hallará uno solo que por la identidad de sucesos sea enteramente parecido a otro. La vida del hombre ¡oh Creso!

Or de ces vingt-cinq mille cinq cent cinquante jours, qui font soixante-dix ans, vous n'en trouverez pas un qui amène un événement absolument semblable.

and of these months the days will be one thousand and fifty.

Beraz, Kreso, gizona zori huts da.

es una serie de calamidades.

Il faut donc en convenir, seigneur, l'homme n'est que vicissitude.

Of all these days, being in number twenty-six thousand two hundred and fifty, which go to the seventy years, one day produces nothing at all which resembles what another brings with it.

Horrela, zu oso aberats eta gizon askoren errege zarela iruditzen zait niri;

Vous avez certainement des richesses considérables, et vous régnez sur un peuple nombreux ;

Thus then, O Croesus, man is altogether a creature of accident.

As for thee, I perceive that thou art both great in wealth and king of many men, but that of which thou didst ask me I cannot call thee yet, until I learn that thou hast brought thy life to a fair ending:

For many very wealthy men are not happy, while many who have but a moderate living are fortunate;

and in truth the very rich man who is not happy has two advantages only as compared with the poor man who is fortunate, whereas this latter has many as compared with the rich man who is not happy.

Puede, en primer lugar, satisfacer todos sus antojos;

mais celui-ci en a un grand nombre sur le riche malheureux. L'homme riche est plus en état de contenter ses désirs et de supporter de grandes pertes ;

The rich man is able better to fulfil his desire, and also to endure a great calamity if it fall upon him;

mais, si l'autre ne peut soutenir de grandes pertes ni satisfaire ses désirs, son bonheur le met à couvert des uns et des autres, et en cela il l'emporte sur le riche. D'ailleurs il a l'usage de tous ses membres, il jouit d'une bonne santé, il n'éprouve aucun malheur, il est beau, et heureux en enfants.

whereas the other has advantage over him in these things which follow:-he is not indeed able equally with the rich man to endure a calamity or to fulfil his desire, but these his good fortune keeps away from him, while he is sound of limb, free from disease, untouched by suffering, the father of fair children and himself of comely form;

and if in addition to this he shall end his life well, he is worthy to be called that which thou seekest, namely a happy man;

Beraz, gizon izanik, ezinezkoa da dohain guztiok bateratzea. Ondasun guztiak berekin dituen herrialderik ez den bezala:

Désele, entretanto, si se quiere, el nombre de afortunado. "Pero es imposible que ningún mortal reúna todos estos bienes;

Il est impossible qu'un homme réunisse tous ces avantages, de même qu'il n'y a point de pays qui se suffise, et qui renferme tous les biens :

Now to possess all these things together is impossible for one who is mere man, just as no single land suffices to supply all tings for itself, but one thing it has and another it lacks, and the land that has the greatest number of things is the best:

but whosoever of men continues to the end in possession of the greatest number of these things and then has a gracious ending of his life, he is by me accounted worthy, O king, to receive this name.

Il faut considérer la fin de toutes choses, et voir quelle en sera l'issue ; car il arrive que Dieu, après avoir fait entrevoir la félicité à quelques hommes, la détruit souvent radicalement."

But we must of every thing examine the end and how it will turn out at the last, for to many God shows but a glimpse of happiness and then plucks them up by the roots and overturns them."

33. Hori esatean ez bide zion graziarik egin Kresori. Hitz bat ere egin gabe agurtu zuen. Tentel hutsa zela iruditu baitzitzaion aurrean zituen ondasunak baztertuz gauza ororen amaierari begiratzeko aholkatzen zuena.

XXXIII. Este discurso, sin mezcla de adulación ni de cortesanos miramientos, desagradó a Creso, el cual despidió a Solón, teniéndolo por un ignorante que, sin hacer caso de los bienes presentes, fijaba la felicidad en el término de las cosas.

Il n'avait rien dit d'agréable à Crésus, et ne lui avait pas témoigné la moindre estime : aussi fut-il renvoyé de la cour. Il est probable qu'on traita de grossier un homme qui, sans égard aux biens présents, voulait qu'en tout on envisageât la fin.

33. Thus saying he refused to gratify Croesus, who sent him away from his presence holding him in no esteem, and thinking him utterly senseless in that he passed over present good things and bade men look to the end of every matter.

34. Eta Solonek alde egin ondoren, jainkoaren mendekua jabetu zen Kresoz, itxura denez, gizon guztietan dohatsuena zela sinesturik zegoelako.

XXXIV. Después de la partida de Solón, la venganza del cielo se dejó sentir sobre Creso, en castigo, a lo que parece, de su orgullo por haberse creído el más dichoso de los mortales.

XXXIV. Après le départ de Solon, la vengeance des dieux éclata d'une manière terrible sur Crésus, en punition, comme on peut le conjecturer, de ce qu'il s'estimait le plus heureux de tous les hommes.

34. After Solon had departed, a great retribution from God came upon Croesus, probably because he judged himself to be the happiest of all men.

Bat-batean, lotan zegoela, bere semeari gertatuko zitzaizkion zorigaitzen egia agertzen zion amets bat heldu zitzaion.

Durmiendo una noche le asaltó un sueño en que se lo presentaron las desgracias que amenazaban a su hijo.

Un songe, qu'il eut aussitôt après, lui annonça les malheurs dont un de ses fils était menacé. Il en avait deux :

First there came and stood by him a dream, which showed to him the truth of the evils that were about to come to pass in respect of his son.

Kresok seme bi zituen; batak ajea zuen, mutua baitzen;

De dos que tenía, el uno era sordo y lisiado;

l'un affligé d'une disgrâce naturelle, il était muet ; l'autre surpassait en tout les jeunes gens de son âge.

Now Croesus had two sons, of whom one was deficient, seeing that he was deaf and dumb, while the other far surpassed his companions of the same age in all things:

y el otro, llamado Atis, el más sobresaliente de los jóvenes de su edad.

Il se nommait Atys. C'est donc cet Atys que le songe indiqua à Crésus comme devant périr d'une arme de fer.

and the name of this last was Atys. As regards this Atys then, the dream signified to Croesus that he should lose him by the blow of an iron spear-point:

Atys hau, bada, burdin punta baten zauriz galduko zuela adierazten zion ametsak.

Este perecería traspasado con una punta de hierro si el sueño se verificaba.

Le roi réfléchit à son réveil sur ce songe.

and when he rose up from sleep and considered the matter with himself, he was struck with fear on account of the dream;

Cuando Creso despertó se puso lleno de horror a meditar sobre él, y desde luego hizo casar a su hijo y no volvió a encargarle el mando de sus tropas, a pesar de que antes era el que solía conducir los lidios al combate;

Tremblant pour son fils, il lui choisit une épouse et l'éloigna des armées, à la tête desquelles il avait coutume de l'envoyer.

and first he took for his son a wife; and whereas his son had been wont to lead the armies of the Lydians, he now no longer sent him forth anywhere on any such business;

Il fit aussi enlever les dards, les piques, et toutes sortes d'armes offensives dont on fait usage à la guerre, des appartements des hommes où elles étaient suspendues, et les fit entasser dans des magasins, de peur qu'il n'en tombât quelqu'une sur son fils.

and the javelins and lances and all such things which men use for fighting he conveyed out of the men's apartments and piled them up in the inner bed-chambers, for fear lest something hanging up might fall down upon his son.

35. Eta semearen ezteia eskuartean zuela, hor non etortzen den Sardesa zorigaiztoz eskuak zikinduak zituen gizon bat, jatorriz phrygiarra eta errege-odolekoa.

XXXV. Mientras Creso disponía las bodas, llegó a Sardes un frigio de sangre real, que había tenido la desgracia de ensangrentar sus manos con un homicidio involuntario.

XXXV. Pendant que Crésus était occupé des noces de ce jeune prince, arrive à Sardes un malheureux dont les mains étaient impures : cet homme était Phrygien, et issu du sang royal.

35. Then while he was engaged about the marriage of his son, there came to Sardis a man under a misfortune and with hands not clean, a Phrygian by birth and of the royal house.

Eta Kresoren egoitzan aurkezturik, herriko ohituren arabera araztasuna lor ziezaiola eskatu zion.

Puesto en la presencia del rey, le pidió se dignase purificarle de aquella mancha, lo que ejecutó Creso según los ritos del país, que en esta clase de expansiones son muy parecidos a los de la Grecia.

Arrivé au palais, il pria Crésus de le purifier, suivant les lois du pays.

This man came to the house of Croesus, and according to the customs which prevail in that land made request that he might have cleansing;

Eta Kresok araztu egin zuen. Lydiarrek eta heleniarrek arazkera berdintsua izaki.

Concluida la ceremonia, y deseoso de sabor quién era y de donde venía, le habló así:

Ce prince le purifia. Les expiations chez les Lydiens ressemblent beaucoup à celles qui sont usitées en Grèce.

and Croesus gave him cleansing: now the manner of cleansing among the Lydians is the same almost as that which the Hellenes use.

Baina Kresok ohikoak egin zituenean, nondik zetorren eta nor zen galdetu zion esanez:

Après la cérémonie, Crésus voulut savoir d'où il venait et qui il était.

So when Croesus had done that which was customary, he asked of him whence he came and who he was, saying as follows:
