This was he who fought with the Lydians when the day became night as they fought, and who also united under his rule the whole of Asia above the river Halys. And having gathered together all his subjects he marched upon Nineveh to avenge his father, and also because he desired to conquer that city.

These had invaded Asia after driving the Kimmerians out of Europe, and in pursuit of them as they fled they had come to the land of Media.

However the Scythians did not make their invasion by this way, but turned aside from it to go by the upper road which is much longer, keeping Mount Caucasus on their right hand.

105. Thence they went on to invade Egypt; and when they were in Syria which is called Palestine, Psammetichos king of Egypt met them; and by gifts and entreaties he turned them from their purpose, so that they should not advance any further:

and as they retreated, when they came to the city of Ascalon in Syria, most of the Scythians passed through without doing any damage, but a few of them who had stayed behind plundered the temple of Aphrodite Urania.

Celui de Cypre lui doit son origine, de l'aveu même des Cypriens. Celui de Cythère a été aussi bâti par des Phéniciens originaires de cette Syrie.

for the temple in Cyprus was founded from this, as the people of Cyprus themselves report, and it was the Phenicians who founded the temple in Kythera, coming from this land of Syria.

Eta Askalongo santutegia arpilatu zuten szythiarrei eta hauen aldian aldiko ondorengoei jainkosak emetasun-gaitza itsatsi zien;

La déesse envoya une maladie de femme à ceux d'entre les Scythes qui avaient pillé le temple d'Ascalon, et ce châtiment s'étendit à jamais sur leur postérité.

So these Scythians who had plundered the temple at Ascalon, and their descendants for ever, were smitten by the divinity with a disease which made them women instead of men:

Then Kyaxares with the Medes, having invited the greater number of them to a banquet, made them drunk and slew them;

107. After this Kyaxares died, having reigned forty years including those years during which the Scythians had rule, and Astyages son of Kyaxares received from him the kingdom.

and in his sleep it seemed to him that there passed from her so much water as to fill his city and also to flood the whole of Asia.

A este monarca le pareció ver en sueño que su hija despedía tanta orina, que no solamente llenaba con ella la ciudad, sino que inundaba toda el Asia.

Ayant communiqué ce songe à ceux d'entre les mages qui faisaient profession de les interpréter, il fut effrayé des détails de leur explication ;

This dream he delivered over to the Magian interpreters of dreams, and when he heard from them the truth at each point he became afraid.

And afterwards when this Mandane was of an age to have a husband, he did not give her in marriage to any one of the Medes who were his peers, because he feared the vision; but he gave her to a Persian named Cambyses, whom he found to be of a good descent and of a quiet disposition, counting him to be in station much below a Mede of middle rank.

108. Eta Mandane Kambysesekin bizi zela, lehenengo urtean Astyagesek beste ikuspen bat izan zuen: iruditu zitzaion bere alaba honen lotsaizunetatik mahatsondo bat sortu eta Asia osoaz jabetzen zela.

CVIII. Viviendo ya Mandane en compañía de Cambises, su marido, volvió Astiages en aquel primer año a tener otra visión, en la cual le pareció que del centro del cuerpo de su hija salía una parra que cubría con su sombra toda el Asia.

108. And when Mandane was married to Cambyses, in the first year Astyages saw another vision.

Eta hau ikusi eta amets-interpretarien baitan jarri ondoren, Persiatik erditzear zegoen bere alaba ekarrarazi zuen; eta, iritsi orduko, zaindu egin zuen, haregandik jaiotzen zena hiltzeko asmoz; zeren ikuspenari buruz magoetako amets-interpretariek, bere lekuan alabaren umea izango zela errege adierazi zioten.

Habiendo participado este nuevo sueño a los mismos adivinos, hizo venir de Persia a su hija, que estaba ya en los últimos días de su embarazo, y le puso guardias con el objeto de matar a la prole que diese a luz, por haberle manifestado los intérpretes que aquella criatura estaba destinada a reinar en su lugar.

il lui sembla voir sortir du sein de sa fille une vigne qui couvrait toute l'Asie. Ayant communiqué ce songe aux interprètes, il fit venir de Perse Mandane , sa fille, qui était enceinte et proche de son terme.

It seemed to him that from the womb of this daughter a vine grew, and this vine overspread the whole of Asia. Having seen this vision and delivered it to the interpreters of dreams, he sent for his daughter, being then with child, to come from the land of the Persians.

Beraz, Astyages zain zegoela Zyro jaio zenean, Harpago, gizon etxetiar eta mediarretan leialena izateaz gainera bere ondasun guztien gain zegoenari deituz, honela mintzatu zitzaion:

Queriendo Astiages impedir que la predicción se realizase, luego que nació Ciro, llamó a Hárpago, uno de sus familiares, el más fiel de los medos, y el ministro encargado de todos sus negocios, y cuando le tuvo en su presencia le habló de esta manera:

Aussitôt après son arrivée, il la fit garder, dans le dessein de faire périr l'enfant dont elle serait mère ; les mages, interprètes des songes, lui ayant prédit, d'après cette vision, que l'enfant qui naîtrait de cette princesse régnerait un jour à sa place.

And when she had come he kept watch over her, desiring to destroy that which should be born of her; for the Magian interpreters of dreams signified to him that the offspring of his daughter should be king in his room.

"Harpago, eman bide diadan eginkizuna ez iezadak gutxiets, ez nazak engaina, eta besteren ona aukeratzeagatik ez hadi azkenean heure buruarekin behaztopa.

Astyages then desiring to guard against this, when Cyrus was born, called Harpagos, a man who was of kin near him and whom he trusted above all the other Medes, and had made him manager of all his affairs;

and to him he said as follows: "Neglect not by any means, Harpagos, the matter which I shall lay upon thee to do, and beware lest thou set me aside, and choosing the advantage of others instead, bring thyself afterwards to destruction.

To this he made answer: "O king, never yet in any past time didst thou discern in me an offence against thee, and I keep watch over myself also with a view to the time that comes after, that I may not commit any error towards thee.

109. Harpagok horrela erantzun zuen arren, haurtxoa heriotzarako prestaturik entregatu ziotenean, bere etxera joan zen negarrez. Eta, iristean, Astyagesek esandako guztia kontatu zion bere andreari.

CIX. Hárpago dio esta respuesta, y cuando le entregaron el niño, ricamente vestido, para llevarle a la muerte, se fue llorando a su casa y comunicó a su mujer lo que con Astiages le había pasado.

CIX. Après cette réponse, on remit l'enfant, couvert de riches ornements, entre les mains d'Harpage, afin qu'il le fit mourir.

109. Thus he made answer, and when the child had been delivered to him adorned as for death, Harpagos went weeping to his wife all the words which had been spoken by Astyages.

Eta honek "Beraz, zer egitea bururatzen zaizu orain?", esan zion.

Il s'en retourna chez lui les larmes aux yeux ;

And she said to him:

for not even if he shall come to be yet more out of his senses and more mad than he now is, will I agree to his will or serve him in such a murder as this.

And for many reasons I will not slay the child;

CX. Dicho esto, envió sin dilación un propio a uno de los pastores del ganado vacuno de Astiages, de quien sabía que apacentaba sus rebaños en abundantísimos pastos, dentro de unas montañas pobladas de fieras.

CX. Il dit, et sur-le-champ il envoya un exprès à celui des bouviers d'Astyages qu'il savait mener ses troupeaux dans les meilleurs pâturages, et sur les montagnes les plus fréquentées par les bêtes sauvages.
