En cierta ocasión, cuando ambos jóvenes llevaban ya casi tres años viviendo con los samanas y compartiendo sus prácticas, les llegó por diversas fuentes y canales una noticia, un rumor, una leyenda:

Les deux jeunes gens se trouvaient depuis environ trois ans avec les Samanas dont ils partageaient l'existence, quand, un jour, une nouvelle-était-ce un bruit ou une légende ?

At one time, when the two young men had lived among the Samanas for about three years and had shared their exercises, some news, a rumour, a myth reached them after being retold many times:

He was said to wander through the land, teaching, surrounded by disciples, without possession, without home, without a wife, in the yellow cloak of an ascetic, but with a cheerful brow, a man of bliss, and Brahmans and princes would bow down before him and would become his students.

in the towns, the Brahmans spoke of it and in the forest, the Samanas;

Kondaira, zurrumurru, ipuin horren lurrinak airea astintzen zuen han eta hemen, brahmanek hortaz ziharduten hirietan, samanek basoetan, etengabe errepikatzen zen gazteen belarrietan Gotamaren izena, Buda, onerako zein txarrerako, laudatuz zein mesprezatuz.

Esta leyenda, rumor o cuento se fue difundiendo por todas partes como un perfume. Los brahamanes hablaban de ella en las ciudades, y los samanas, en los bosques. Y el nombre de Gotama, el Buda, llegaba constantemente a oídos de los jóvenes, para bien o para mal, aureolado de alabanzas o cubierto de improperios.

et toujours le nom de Gotama, de Bouddha, revenait aux oreilles des jeunes gens, avec des louanges chez ceux qui le disaient bon et des insultes chez ceux qui le disaient mauvais.

Comme dans une contrée où règne la peste, quand se répand la nouvelle qu'ici ou là se trouve un homme, un sage ou un savant dont la parole ou le souffle suffit pour guérir ceux qui sont frappés du mal, tout le monde parle de lui, beaucoup croient, beaucoup doutent, mais beaucoup aussi se mettent en route pour aller trouver le Sage, le Sauveur ; de même cette légende tout imprégnée du parfum de Gotama, du Bouddha, du Sage de la famille des Sakya, se propageait à travers les pays. " Les plus hautes connaissances, disaient les croyants, lui étaient échues en partage :

It was as if the plague had broken out in a country and news had been spreading around that in one or another place there was a man, a wise man, a knowledgeable one, whose word and breath was enough to heal everyone who had been infected with the pestilence, and as such news would go through the land and everyone would talk about it, many would believe, many would doubt, but many would get on their way as soon as possible, to seek the wise man, the helper, just like this this myth ran through the land, that fragrant myth of Gotama, the Buddha, the wise man of the family of Sakya.

The myth of Buddha sounded sweet. The scent of magic flowed from these reports.

Mundua eri zen, eta jasaten gogorra bizitza..., eta hara non agertzen den iturri berria, mezulari baten deiadarra entzuten zela zirudien, kontsolagarria, samurra, promes handiz betea.

El mundo se hallaba, sin duda, enfermo, y la vida era difícil de soportar..., cuando hete aquí que una fuente parece brotar y un mensaje repercute de improviso, rebosante de consuelo, ternura y nobles promesas.

Le monde était malade, la vie bien dure à supporter... et voilà qu'une source semble jaillir, voilà que retentit, plein de consolations, de tendresse et de nobles promesses, l'appel d'un messager.

After all, the world was sick, life was hard to bear-and behold, here a source seemed to spring forth, here a messenger seemed to call out, comforting, mild, full of noble promises.

Budaren inguruko zurrumurrua zabaltzen zen edonon, Indiako eskualde guztietan, gazteek arretaz entzuten zuten, irrikaz, itxaropenez, eta edozein erromes zein atzerritar ongi hartua zen brahman semeen artean, haren, gorenaren, Sakyamuniaren berririk ekarriz gero.

Dondequiera que llegaran noticias de Buda, en todas las regiones de la India, los jóvenes aguzaban el oído y sentían nacer anhelos y esperanza en su interior; y cualquier peregrino o forastero que trajera noticias de Él, el Sublime, el Sakyamuni, era calurosamente recibido por los hijos de los brahamanes en las ciudades y en los pueblos.

Partout où arrivait un écho de Bouddha, partout, dans les contrées de l'Inde, les jeunes gens tendaient l'oreille, sentaient naître en eux des aspirations inconnues, des espérances, et les fils de brahmanes des villes et des villages accueillaient avec empressement chaque pèlerin et chaque étranger qui leur apportait des nouvelles du Sublime, du Sakyamuni.

Everywhere where the rumour of Buddha was heard, everywhere in the lands of India, the young men listened up, felt a longing, felt hope, and among the Brahmans' sons of the towns and villages every pilgrim and stranger was welcome, when he brought news of him, the exalted one, the Sakyamuni.

Berria basoko samanengana ere iritsi zen, Siddhartha eta Govindarengana, astiro, tantaz tanta, tanta bakoitza itxaropenez beterik, tanta bakoitza zalantzaz blai.

He had heard that this alleged Buddha used to be an ascetic before and had lived in the forest, but had then turned back to luxury and worldly pleasures, and he had no high opinion of this Gotama.

-O Siddhartha-esan zion behin Govindak bere lagunari-, herrian izan naiz gaur, eta brahman batek bere etxera gonbidatu nau.

-Siddhartha-le dijo un día Govinda a su amigo-.

Il tenait donc ce Gotama en très piètre estime.

"Oh Siddhartha," Govinda spoke one day to his friend.

Magadhako brahman seme bat zegoen han, Buda bere begiz ikusi eta haren irakaspenak entzun ahal izan dituena.

" Que ne puis-je aussi, moi, que ne pouvons-nous tous les deux, Siddhartha et moi, passer une heure à entendre la parole de cet homme accompli !

If only I would too, if only we both would too, Siddhartha and me, live to see the hour when we will hear the teachings from the mouth of this perfected man!

Esadazu, adiskide, ez gara haraino joango, Budaren beraren ahotik irakaspenak aditzera?

-O Govinda, beti uste izan dut, Govinda samanen artean geratuko zela, bere helburua hirurogei eta hirurogeita hamar urte bete eta samanaren ezaugarri goren diren arte eta ariketekin jarraitzea zela.

-Siempre creí, Govinda, que acabarías quedándote con los samanas; siempre pensé que tu meta sería llegar a los sesenta o setenta años y seguir practicando las artes y ejercicios que ennoblecen a un samana.

So now you, my faithful friend, want to take a new path and go there, where the Buddha spreads his teachings."

"You're mocking me.

Egidazu iseka, Siddhartha!

Mock me if you like, Siddhartha!

Alabaina, zeure baitan ere ez al da desira hori, doktrina hori aditzeko gogoa piztu?

Mais toi-même, ne sens-tu pas le besoin, n'éprouves-tu pas l'envie d'entendre cette doctrine ?

But have you not also developed a desire, an eagerness, to hear these teachings?

Eta ez al zenidan behin esan, ez zenuela samanen bidea luzaroan ibiltzeko asmorik?

¿Y no me dijiste hace poco que ya no pensabas continuar por la senda de los samanas?

Et ne me disais-tu pas un jour que tu ne suivrais pas plus longtemps la même route que les Samanas ?

And have you not at one time said to me, you would not walk the path of the Samanas for much longer?"

Barre egin zuen Siddharthak, bere erara, eta bere ahotsean tristuraren eta isekaren zantzuak sumatzen zirela, zera adierazi zion:

If you only remembered the other thing as well, you've heard from me, which is that I have grown distrustful and tired against teachings and learning, and that my faith in words, which are brought to us by teachers, is small.

Baina goazen, adiskide, prest nago irakaspen horiek entzuteko, nire bihotzean irakaspen horien fruiturik onena dagoeneko dastatu dugula uste izan arren.

Mas no importa, amigo mío: estoy dispuesto a escuchar aquellas enseñanzas, aunque en el fondo de mi corazón algo me dice que ya hemos cosechado sus mejores frutos.

Mais peu importe, très cher, je suis prêt à entendre cette doctrine, bien que quelque chose me dise au fond du c?ur que nous en avons déjà recueilli les meilleurs fruits.

But let's do it, my dear, I am willing to listen to these teachings-though in my heart I believe that we've already tasted the best fruit of these teachings."

-Zu prest egoteak bihotza alaitzen dit.

-Tu disponibilidad me alegra el corazón.

Govinda répondit :

"Your willingness delights my heart.

Baina esan, nola liteke?

Mas dime, ¿cómo es posible todo esto?

" Je suis bien heureux que tu sois prêt à partir ;

But tell me, how should this be possible?

Nola emango zigun jada Gotamaren irakaspenak bere fruitua entzun baino lehen?

¿Cómo la doctrina de Buda puede habernos dado sus mejores frutos antes de que la hayamos escuchado?

mais dis-moi, comment, selon toi, serait-il possible que la doctrine de Gotama nous ait donné ses meilleurs fruits, avant même que nous la connussions ? "

How should the Gotama's teachings, even before we have heard them, have already revealed their best fruit to us?"

"Let us eat this fruit and wait for the rest, oh Govinda!

Hauxe da Gotamari dagoeneko zor diogun fruitua, Samanengandik alde egiteko deitzen gaituela.

Pues el primer fruto que debemos a Gotama es el habernos alejado de los samanas.

Pour l'instant, celui que nous devons à Gotama, c'est de nous faire quitter les Samanas !

But this fruit, which we already now received thanks to the Gotama, consisted in him calling us away from the Samanas!

Gainerakorik, eskaintzeko hobeagorik duenentz, adiskide, itxaron dezagun lasai.

¿Podrá darnos, además, cosas mejores? Esto, amigo mío, más vale esperarlo con el corazón tranquilo.

Nous donnera-t-il encore quelque autre chose de meilleur, ô mon ami, c'est ce qu'il nous faut attendre d'un c?ur tranquille.

Whether he has also other and better things to give us, oh friend, let us await with calm hearts."

Egun hartan bertan Siddharthak samanen artean zaharrenari jakinarazi zion erabakia, samanak uzteko asmoa.
