Technology Platforms
ETPs and ETIPs - an overview
European Technology Platforms (ETPs) are industry-led stakeholder fora recognised by the European Commission as key actors in driving innovation, knowledge transfer and European competitiveness in their sector. ETPs develop research and innovation agendas and roadmaps for action at EU and national level to be supported by both private and public funding. They mobilise stakeholders to actively contribute to the agreed priorities and share information across the EU. By working effectively together, they also help deliver solutions to major challenges of key concern to citizens such as the ageing society, the environment and food and energy security. ETPs are independent and self-financing entities. They conduct their activities in a transparent manner and are open to new members. The list above provides an overview on the individual European Technology Platforms and Joint Undertakings:
Bioeconomy
- Food for Life. Step-change the innovation power and impact of the European food industry to the benefit of a sustainable society.
- Plants for the Future. Promoting the flow of innovation to the market for the benefit of the society.
- The Forest-based Sector. The European hub for research and innovation in the forest-based bioeconomy.
- Sustainable Chemistry (SUSCHEM). They address challenges specific to the European chemical and industrial biotechnology sectors for the benefit of society as a whole.
- Farm Animal Breeding and Reproduction (FABRE TP). Define research priorities for animal breeding, genetics and reproduction sector to accelerate the sustainability and resilience of all animal farming systems.
- Biofuels (ETIP Bioenergy). Brings together relevant actors from academia, industry, and civil society, engaged in the development of sustainable bioenergy and competitive biofuel technologies.
- European Aquaculture Technology and Innovation Platform. International non-profit association dedicated to developing, supporting and promoting aquaculture.
- Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC). Strengthening the bio-based industries sector in Europe.
Energy
- European Photovoltaic Technology Platform (ETIP PV). They aim to actively support achieving the European Union’s green energy policy goals as well as the additional actions needed to limit global temperature rise to 1,5°C.
- European Technology Platform on Renewable Heating & Cooling (RHC-ETP). They bring together stakeholders from the biomass, geothermal, solar thermal and heat pump sectors to define a common strategy for increasing the use of renewable energy technologies for heating and cooling.
- Electricity Networks for the Future (E.DSO). Promotes and enables customers empowerment and the increase in the use of clean energy sources.
- Sustainable Nuclear Energy Technology Platform (SNETP). Support and promote the safe, reliable and efficient operation of Generation II, III and IV civil nuclear systems.
- ETIP Ocean. Platform for ocean energy experts to share knowledge and identify solutions to progress the ocean energy sector.
- ETIP Wind. Public platform to wind energy stakeholders to identify common Research & Innovation (R&I) priorities and to foster breakthrough innovations in the sector.
- European Construction and sustainable built environment Technology Platform (ETIP ECTP). Organisation promoting and influencing the future of the Built Environment.
- European Energy Research Alliance (EERA). Membership-based, non-profit association, constituting the largest low-carbon energy research community in Europe.
Industrial Technologies
- European Technology Platform for the Future of Textiles and Clothing (Textile ETP). Open expert network of professionals involved in textile and clothing-related research and innovation.
- Advanced Engineering Materials & Technologies (EuMat). Assure optimal involvement of industry and other important stakeholders in the process of establishing of R&D priorities in the area of advanced engineering materials and technologies.
- Future Manufacturing Technologies (MANUFUTURE). Propose, develop and implement a strategy based on Research and Innovation, capable of speeding up the rate of industrial transformation.
- European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP). Initiative to improve the competitive situation of the European Union in the field of steel technology.
Mobility and Space
- European Road Transport Research Advisory Council (ERTRAC). Provide a framework to focus the coordinated efforts of public and private resources on the necessary research activities.
- European Rail Transport Research Advisory Council (ERRAC). Help revitalise the EU’s rail sector and make it more competitive by fostering increased innovation and guiding research efforts at European level.
- WATERBORNE ETP. An industry-oriented Technology Platform to establish a continuous dialogue between all waterborne stakeholders.
- Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE). Provides strategic, technical and institutional guidance to the European Commission, Member States and its stakeholders.
- Alliance for Logistics Innovation through Collaboration in Europe (ALICE). Develop and implement a comprehensive industry lead strategy for research, innovation and market deployment in the field of logistics and supply chain management in Europe.
Information and Communication Technologies
- NetworldEurope. Gathers players in the communications systems sector.
- AENEAS - European NanoElectronics ActivitieS. Industry association promoting RD&I in Electronic Components & Systems to strengthen European competitiveness.
- Embedded Systems (ARTEMIS). Association for actors in Embedded Intelligent Systems within Europe.
- New European Media (NEM). Aims fostering the convergence between consumer electronics, broadcasting and telecoms in order to develop the emerging business sector of networked and electronic media.
- The Photonics Technology Platform (Photonics 21). Aims to establish Europe as a leader in the development and deployment of photonics technologies wihtin various applications fields.
- European Technology Platform on Smart System Integration (EPoSS). Industry-driven policy initiative, defining R&D and innovation needs as well as policy requirements related to Smart Systems Integration and integrated Micro- and Nanosystems.
- European Technology Platform for High Performance Computing (ETP4HPC). Aims to establish a globally competitive European HPC technology value chain.

- ETP Nanomedicine (ETPN). Address the application of nanotechnology in healthcare.

- Big Data Value Association (BDVA). Industry-driven research and innovation organisation to develop an innovation ecosystem that enables the data-driven and AI-enabled digital transformation of the economy and society in Europe.
- European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA).
- European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). Agency of the European Union, serves as an impartial source of scientific advice to risk managers and to communicate on risks associated with the food chain.
- European Marine Biological Resource Centre (EMBRC). Europe’s ‘research infrastructure’ for marine biological resources.
- European Radioecology Alliance (ERAA). Coordinate and promote European research in radioecology.
- European Science Foundation (ESF). Provides institutional scientific-support partnerships, scientific platforms administrations as well as EU project and programme management to the European Research Area (ERA).
- European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI). Strategic instrument to develop the scientific integration of Europe and to strengthen its international outreach.
