SEAREFINERY: Improved valorization of marine sources and processing waste for resource efficient blue food/feed and environmentally sustainable materials development.

Specific programme: SBEP 2023

The Partnership for a Sustainable Blue Economy represents an unprecedented effort by 74 partner institutions from 29 countries and the European Commission to pool investments in research and innovation and align national programmes on a pan-European scale. As a partnership co-financed by Horizon Europe, its strategy takes into account the R&I agendas of the maritime basins (Mediterranean, Black Sea, Baltic and North Sea) and the Atlantic Ocean and builds on lessons learned from previous initiatives.

Brief description:

SEAREFINERY aims to establish a novel bio-based platform for the sustainable production of food, feed, packaging and electrode materials by using marine sources and processing fishery waste. This project seeks to transform marine ecosystems and waste processing into valuable products through flexible and adaptive biorefinery techniques.

By focusing on local sources and needs in EU countries, SEAREFINERY aims to develop innovative approaches aligned with EU circular bioeconomy strategies and policies. The project prioritises biodiversity and the sustainable use of marine resources in five seas defined by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. In collaboration with six local partners, SEAREFINERY addresses key research questions related to valorisation approaches, resource management and stakeholder engagement within the scope of the Blue Economy. Its overall objective is to contribute to a climate-neutral, environmentally sustainable and resource-efficient blue food and feed sector.
