Pillar 2: Global Challenges and European Industrial Competitiveness

The Global Challenges and European Industrial Competiveness pillar supports research relating to societal challenges and reinforces technological and industrial capacities through 6 CLUSTERS.

It sets EU-missions with ambitious goals tackling some of our biggest problems. More information on Missions is available here.

It also includes activities pursued by the Joint Research Centre which supports EU and national policymakers with independent scientific evidence and technical support.

Social sciences and humanities are fully integrated across all clusters, including specific and dedicated activities.

Pillar II covers activities from a broad range of Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs),
including lower TRLs.

Pillar II holds the lion’s share of the HE programme funding.

Pillar II supports research projects carried out by international and inter-disciplinary consortia. The projects address specific pre-defined topics proposed by the EC which fall into six different clusters, each of them focused on specific global societal and industrial challenges. More information on the specific content of each cluster is available by clicking the links below:

  1. Health
  2. Culture Creativity and Inclusive Society
  3. Civil Security for Society
  4. Digital Industry & Space
  5. Climate, Energy & Mobility
  6. Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture & Environment

BlueAdapt - Reducing climate based health risks in blue environments: Adapting to the climate change impacts on coastal pathogens

Specific programme: HORIZON-HLTH-2021-ENVHLTH-02-03 - HORIZON Research and Innovation Actions
UPV/EHU Partner Status: Beneficiary
UPV/EHU PI: Juan Antonio Marigomez

Project start: 01/10/2022
Project end: 30/09/2026

Brief description: BlueAdapt brings together an interdisciplinary team of biologists, climate scientists, economists, epidemiologists and public health experts to investigate and quantify the future health risks associated with selected coastal pathogens. BlueAdapt will provide tools to assess the impacts of policy responses and communicate the results to a wide audience, including both policymakers and the public. A conceptual framework will be developed around existing models of One Health and Ecological Public Health, to help wider engagement with the complex nature of the issue. Horizons scanning and downscaled climate modelling will feed into lab based experiments and the development of simulations around how changes in climate variables, interacting with other environmental change, may influence the state of selected microbial pathogens of public health concern in coastal waters. Case studies will illustrate how One Health and Ecological Public Health concepts can be used to generate action and identify potential barriers to adaptation. Health impact assessment and cost-benefit analysis will inform appropriate action. BlueAdapt Innovation Slams and policy workshops will help deliver wider impact from the project including new-to-firm and new-to-market products and services.
