The SYMBIOREM project has been selected to participate in the exhibition at the 12th Framework Programme Conference in Spain
First publication date: 31/10/2024
The project “SYMBIOREM: Symbiotic circular bioremediation systems and biotechnological solutions to improve environmental, economic and social sustainability in pollution control”, coordinated by the UPV/EHU, has been selected by the CDTI to be part of the poster exhibition of projects coordinated by Spanish entities funded through Horizon Europe. This event will be held on November 28, 2024 within the 12th Conference of the Framework Programme in Spain at the Oviedo Exhibition and Congress Palace.
The research project
The general objective of SYMBIOREM is to improve the effectiveness, sustainability, circularity and profitability of bioremediation and revitalization strategies for soils, sediments, surface and groundwater. SYMBIOREM focuses on the intersection of advanced bioremediation methods with biologically-based circular systems. Twelve new bio-based technologies and strategies are developed as modular solutions to mutually improve bioremediation efficiency, utilise secondary inputs and convert waste and pollutants into valuable resources.
SYMBIOREM investigates the potential for exploiting indigenous species with bioremediation capabilities, including microorganisms, microbiomes, proteins, plants and animals. It will provide new insights into bioremediation agents, their functionality in combination, as well as the dangers of pollutant remobilisation. SYMBIOREM elaborates new pathways for circular value creation and empowers people on the ground by involving citizens and key stakeholders in participatory research, co-design and co-management of bioremediation sites, to facilitate bottom-up replication and increased safety and sustainability of bioremediation and revitalization strategies with the aim of achieving the objectives of the EU Zero Pollution Action Plan.
12th Conference of the Framework Programme in Spain
The 12th Conference of the Framework Programme in Spain has been organised by the CDTI, in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, the European Commission, the City Council of Oviedo and Sekuens.
Its main objective is to analyse the functioning of Horizon Europe and its major initiatives to date. During the Conference, the results of the participation of our country Spain will be reviewed in order to draw conclusions that will allow Spanish entities to improve their participation and positioning strategies in Europe.
In addition, at the Conference, different perspectives on the future Framework Programme for Research and Innovation of the European Union for the period 2028-2034 will be shared. It will also serve to receive personalised advice on Horizon Europe and there will be the possibility of arranging meetings with other attendees to promote collaboration.
