Project Summary:
PlantSci Law is a Jean Monnet module, within the Jean Monnet program of actions in the field of Higher Education. Its objective is to offer training in European studies to graduates and professionals in the agri-sciences. The European Green Deal bases many of its objectives on agricultural innovation and plant breeding. As a result, processes have been initiated to create new policy frameworks on strategic issues. This is, among other issues, the case of the New Genomic Techniques or the European strategy on Plant Reproductive Material, as well as those regulatory areas that refer to the Sustainability of Agriculture and, in particular, Organic Agriculture. On the other hand, the strategic lines in the H2020 Bioeconomy Call published in December 2022 require in most cases that PlantScientists incorporate in their research projects partners that make solid contributions in the field of SSH. In this sense, it is essential to generate spaces for synergy not only at the research levels but also in the training phases of the scientific researchers in Plant Sciences.
Bringing knowledge on the aforementioned topics closer to graduates and professionals in the Agro-sciences is not easy. On the one hand, because in their university education they have not received basic training on what the EU is and how it works. On the other hand, because within the functioning of the EU and its historical evolution, the integration of agriculture and the rapprochement of positions on plant innovation have a number of particularities that make them exceptional in the overall functioning of the EU. The Governance of Agriculture and Agrotechnologies is not dealt with in such detail even in Law or Political Science degrees. In this transdisciplinary module, SSH and STEM academics from different European universities participate, together with institutional decision makers and stakeholders. The overall mission is to provide a solid perspective on the EU, its governance and regulatory model to plant scientists.
