Brief description:

Taking an evidence-based approach to REinventing media literacy and digital skills in Europe, REMEDIS seeks to develop and evaluate intervention strategies in response to existing gaps in media literacy and digital skills in Europe. To achieve this, REMEDIS 1) seeks to provide evidence-based factors influencing media literacy, digital skills and well-being in a large number of empirical studies (mostly quantitative) to inform media and literacy agencies and their partners; 2) develop improvements through co-design and co-creation to be implemented in 12 existing initiatives (2 per country involved in REMEDIS) across various life domains that are considered to offer the most promise in fostering media literacy and digital skills among the general population or target groups from a life-span perspective; and 3) develop evidence-based methods and indicators for the evaluation of these interventions. REMEDIS adopts an evidence-based flow where each work package provides the inputs for each subsequent work package.

Work package 1: The development of a quantitative evidence base will allow us to identify the drivers of media literacy and digital skills based on a systematic review of the evidence.

Work package 2: Co-development of improvements and initiatives considered promising to foster media literacy and digital skills together with media literacy agencies and their partners in the six countries where REMEDIS will operate;

Work package 3: Evaluation and validation of a selection of intervention strategies based on the results of work packages 1 and 2;

Work package 4: REMEDIS fully integrates the results of work package 3 in collaboration with key policy makers and practitioners throughout the project through the implementation of the improvements as a result of the results of the evaluation strategies. The results of the project will lead to the development of evidence-based policy recommendations and a set of evaluation tools.

Other REMEDIS work packages ensure dissemination and communication (work package 5) and exploitation (work package 6).

The concept of REMEDIS is that in order to achieve evidence-based approaches to further develop and evaluate initiatives that promote media literacy and digital skills, a truly evidence-based structure must be followed. In line with this concept, REMEDIS adopts an innovative research strategy that firstly seeks to identify and quantify the most prominent drivers of media literacy and digital skills from an ongoing perspective, and aims to synthesize existing evidence on the effectiveness of current interventions that promote media literacy and digital skills.

The development of a responsive and forward-looking media literacy and digital skills policy lacks up-to-date knowledge and a deeper understanding of the media and digital literacy needs of citizens.
