Structural Optimization Research Group

Welcome to the home page of the Structural Optimization Research Group of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Based in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering in Bilbao, our team is dedicated to developing advanced structural optimization techniques for various engineering applications.
The group consists of five Ph.D researchers, one junior researcher, and several undergraduate students, all actively engaged in cutting edge reserarch projects. In addition to their research activities, some team members also contribute to undergraduate and master's degree programs, helping to train the next generation of engineers.
We specialize in topology and shape optimization, exploring innovative design methods to enhance structural performance. Our key research areas include:
-
Shape and Topology optimization - Developing advanced computational methods to improve structural design and performance.
-
Topology optimization for Additive Manufacturing - Integrating optimization techniques with additive manufacturing (AM) processes. Our research team analyzes the limitations of AM processes and incorporates them into optimum design algorithms. This includes the development of overhang constraints, dripping effect prevention techniques, and continuum fiber reinforcement methods.
-
Optimum design of coated structures - Investigating coating techniques, infill optimization and multi-scale structures, including bone-inspired geometries.
-
Optimum design of thermal conductors - Designing needle-like steady state heat transfer systems for enhanced thermal efficiency.
-
Topology optimization of shell structures - Improving the design and performance of lightweight shel structures.
On this website, you will find information about our main research areas, results from selected projects, profiles of team members, and a comprehensive list of publications. Many of these publications are available for download - please visit the Publications section to access them.
