Racism and healthcare: addressing invisible inequalities

CONFERENCE. RACISM AND HEALTHCARE: ADDRESSING INVISIBLE INEQUALITIES

April 10, 2025 | Juliana Agirrezabala conference room | Bilbao Faculty of Education (UPV-EHU)

Racism is a determinant of health that exists in all societies and that has significant health impacts, leading to higher morbidity and premature mortality among racialized populations. The healthcare system is one of the institutions where racism is embedded, posing a fundamental barrier to equitable healthcare, operating at both structural and interpersonal levels.

In Europe, scientific evidence on racial discrimination practices in healthcare is limited. Moreover, there are few opportunities for reflection and knowledge exchange on this issue from an interdisciplinary perspective, with input from both the clinical field and non-profit sector organizations working to improve healthcare for racialized populations.

This conference will combine theoretical presentations with discussion panels, allowing for collective reflection on strategies to advance toward a more equitable healthcare system.
