Invitation to the "Basic Income under Debate" Cycle

Basic Income under Debate" Cycle

In recent years, Basic Income has multiplied its presence in all media. An apparently simple idea, but with an important complexity when it comes to specifying how, when and where it can be implemented, establishing a great debate on its possible effectiveness and efficiency to end poverty and promote economic freedom and a generalized dignified life for all people.

From Economists without Borders Euskadi and the Basque Association of Economists we intend to continue enriching this debate with this cycle of 4 sessions that will try to answer some of the most relevant questions when developing a proposal for a Universal and Unconditional Basic Income: Is the BI an effective, efficient and fair measure in the fight against poverty? How does the BI help to achieve the objectives of the feminist movement? Is the BI really fundable? What are the effects of the BI on employment and work?

To answer these and other questions, we are launching 4 virtual debates through Zoom in which we will be able to share arguments for and against BI and we will deal with the aspects that generate the most doubts and opposing opinions in order to advance in the fight against poverty and inequality:

  1. February 16 - Effectiveness, efficiency and justice of BR - Joseba Zalakain, director of the SIIS Documentation and Studies Center of the Eguía Careaga Foundation.
  2. March 2 - Lights and shadows of the BR from a feminist approach - to be confirmed
  3. March 16 - Is the financing of BR sustainable? - Juan A. Gimeno Ullastres, former rector of the UNED, founder and trustee of Economists without Borders.
  4. March 30 - Effects of BR on labor and employment - Sara de la Rica, Professor of Applied Economics at the UPV/EHU and director of ISEAK, and Igor Mera, member of the national coordinator of the ESK trade union.

The debates will have two different focuses:

  • The first (February 16) and the third session (March 16) will feature an introductory intervention by an expert who will address the main arguments of the specific topic, after which the attendees will be divided into groups to discuss various issues raised.
  • The second (March 2) and the fourth (March 30) will have the participation of two guests, one a defender of BR and the other with a more critical approach, who will debate with each other, after which there will be a turn for attendees to launch their own questions or arguments.

All sessions are free of charge and will be held in Spanish, starting at 18:30h (GMT+1).

Architectures that care, spaces for well-being

Despite the confinement, the Securities Factory doesn't stop! This April we bring you #FactoríaEnCasa so that you can continue to reflect on responsible consumption from your homes.

And the fact is that homes are the topic to be discussed this month, and it couldn't be a more timely topic!

Irati Mogollón, a sociologist and expert in facilitating feminist cohousing and activist aging, has chatted virtually with us to bring us closer to a new concept, that of "architectures that care", that is, spaces that put the needs and well-being of human beings at the center.

SSI Berriketan – conversaciones digitales

SSI Berriketan was born out of the belief that in times of health concerns, we need new ways to give back to the community. SSI Group has identified a number of themes, related to our activity, that we think can provide a critical and different look at society and bring new points of view.

The format chosen is a digital conversation between two professionals, one from Grupo SSI and another expert in the field.

The chosen channel is YouTube. Of a maximum duration of one hour, where we will create a digital space to promote conversation and reflection.

The chosen days are Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 1pm to 2pm. Afterwards, this content will be available in the social networks of Grupo SSI where it will be possible to listen again, in a restful way, each one of the sessions.

Look for Grupo SSI on YouTube and don't miss SSI Berriketan!

We have decided to hold the next two workshops of the cycle on Basic Income virtually

Given that the situation of confinement derived from COVID 19 is lengthening, we have decided to hold the next two workshops of the cycle on Basic Income virtually. To do so, we will group the themes of workshops 4 and 5 in the next session, and leave those corresponding to workshops 3 and 6 for the last one.

In this way, on Friday 27 March, from 12:00 to 14:00, we will discuss Basic Income in relation to personal freedom and autonomy, as well as work and the labour market. In the last session on Friday 3 April, also from 12:00 to 14:00, we will discuss Basic Income in relation to the climate emergency and freedom of movement and cultural diversity.

For these last two sessions we will use the UPV/EHU virtual platform blackboard collaborate, and to participate from your computer you must click, a few minutes before the time scheduled for the start of the session, on the link https://eu.bbcollab.com/guest/a3004d5e3f314631b0140ff1bb89945d  and, once inside the platform, indicate your name and join the session.

On 4 December, Wednesday, from 18:00 to 20:00, the conference "La Renta Básica: ¿Una utopía irrealizable o un gran reto posible? will take place at the headquarters of the Basque College of Economists of Donostia. If you want to know more about the conference, read on!

In recent years, Basic Income has multiplied its presence in all the media, although the term has not always been used accurately. This is a social policy proposal that more than a dozen Nobel laureates in Economics have shown interest in and sympathy for.

It is an apparently simple idea, but one of great complexity when it comes to specifying how, when, where it can begin to be implemented, establishing a great debate about its possible effectiveness and efficiency in ending poverty and promoting economic freedom and a dignified life for all people.

We invite not only economists, but also sociologists, anthropologists, psychologists, professionals from all social sciences and all those interested in improving social cohesion and sustainable human development on a truly habitable planet to participate in this debate.

It will consist of a theoretical-practical session directed by Javier Iñiguez del Val, expert in Basic Income of Economists without Borders Euskadi, and Ángel Elías, dean of the Faculty of Labour Relations and Social Work of the UPV/EHU, both part of the ToShare Observatory: for a fair distribution of wealth.

BASIC INCOME OF EQUALS AND FEMINISMS

ARGITAN's reflection and debate on Women and Basic Income lead us to reveal the invisibility of care work, the alliances of capitalism with patriarchy, the feminization of poverty and the importance of basic income as a tool to confront both systems of oppression and domination.

The Basic Income of equals wants to be a very valid tool for our struggles against capitalist heteropatriarchy and to be able to incorporate it from feminisms for the creation of networks of struggle from this new vision.

We want to present the Basic Income in an ecofeminist society, accompanied by policies of reorganization of the works that cannot be stopped and of the existence of sociocommunitarian services that guarantee that the patriarchal logic of the homes is not going to force women to continue doing them alone. We want to move from the centrality of employment to the centrality of life, because one can live without employment but not without working, especially the jobs associated with the care of human life that correspond to everyone.

The Basic Income thus becomes an instrument in the fight against poverty and the distribution of wealth. The Basic Income initiative aims to contribute to feminist struggles. From the diversity of the Feminist Movement contribute to fight against all types of oppression and create conditions to reach processes of authentic social transformation.

Methodologically, the proposal has a workshop format divided into two parts: A first more theoretical part about the Basic Income of equals, characteristics, definition, objectives, etc.

Another more focused on the daily practice of IGN in Euskal Herria and its impact on the bodies and lives of women.
