Open the door to our doctoral programmes

“Open the door to our doctoral programmes” competition

The Doctoral School (DocS), as part of the 2021 Doctoral Day, launches the “Open the door to our doctoral programmes” competition, with which it aims to let the general public know about our training programmes, and thereby attract new students to the UPV/EHU doctoral school.

In this competition, organised by the DocS, the participants must form a team of at least two people and make a freeform video with a maximum duration of 70 seconds. The content of the video must be aimed at promoting the UPV/EHU doctoral programmes. Particular regard will be given to those videos that offer a transdisciplinary approach and international dimension.

Rules of the competition

PARTICIPATION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Participation in the competition will be in teams of at least 2 people. A name will be chosen for the team, which must have between 5 and 10 characters. Only letters and numbers may be used in the name.

  2. Every member of the participating team must be enrolled on a doctoral programme at the UPV/EHU, although they may be studying different courses.

  3. The participating team must make an original video, that has not been previously released either in part or in full, and which promotes the doctoral programmes at the UPV/EHU.

  4. Videos focusing on one single doctoral thesis will not be accepted, as the objective is to see a transdisciplinary approach.

  5. Basque, Spanish and/or English can be used in the video as working languages.

  6. The maximum duration of the video is 70 seconds. Any videos that are longer than this will be disqualified. The format and resources used for the video are open.

REGISTRATION PERIOD

The submission period for all proposals begins on 10th May and ends on 7th June 2021. Each team may submit one video, and each doctoral student may only form part of one team.

SELECTING THE FINALISTS

A panel appointed by the organisers will shortlist ten videos out of all those submitted. The panel will appraise how effective the video is as regards communication, taking into account the clarity of the message, its accessibility to the general public and its aesthetic presentation. Particular regard will also be given to those teams that present a transdisciplinary approach and the international dimension of the video’s message.

The shortlist of selected videos will be published on 18th June on the DocS website. It is the participants’ responsibility to check the list of finalists, as they will not be notified individually. All the videos will be available on the EHUtb channel.

The DocS will issue a certificate of participation to all participants, provided that the submitted video meets all the stipulated requirements.

FINALIST TEAMS

The organization has decided that the 11 videos presented will go to the final:

COMPETITION FINAL

The final of the competition will take place on 29th June in a face-to-face event to be held at the Bizkaia Aretoa. The event will also be streamed online. The ten shortlisted videos will be shown at this event, and the participating teams will explain, in under 2 minutes, the work carried out by each member of the team and the reasons why they feel their video deserves to win. Failure to attend this final will lead to the video in question being removed from the shortlist.

AWARDS

In total, 5 awards will be given: one to the winning video, two runners-up, and two special prizes.

The winning video will be chosen by vote among the shortlisted teams. The vote will be secret and the teams will not be allowed to vote for their own videos.

The two runners-up will be chosen by online vote among the people who have viewed the videos. If either of these two videos coincides with the winning video chosen by the finalists, the second runner-up prize will be awarded to the third video chosen online. A gift valued at around 50 euro will be raffled among the voters who attend the event online.

The special prizes will be awarded by the organisers as follows: 1) for the video with the greatest transdisciplinary approach; and 2) for the video with the greatest international dimension. Neither of the special prizes can coincide with the winning video.

In the event of a tie, the organisers will establish a tie-break system.

All the shortlisted videos will receive acknowledgement.

The prize money will depend on the number of team members, as shown in the following table.
