C'est l'absence de sens de la souffrance et non celle-ci qui était la malédiction jusqu'ici répandue sur l'humanité,-et l'idéal ascétique lui offrait un sens !

Not suffering, but the senselessness of suffering was the curse which till then lay spread over humanity-and the ascetic ideal gave it a meaning!

gizakizkoa denaren kontrako gorroto hori, areago, animaliazkoa denaren kontrakoa, zentzumenekiko higuin hori, arrazoiarekiko berarekiko, zoriontasunaren eta edertasunaren beldurra, itxura, aldaketa, bilakaera, heriotza, gurari, joranetik bertatik aldentzeko joran hori-horrek guztiak, ausart gaitezen ulertzera, ezerezaren nahimen bat esan nahi du, bizitzaren aurkako aiherra, bizitzaren aurresupostu oinarrizkoenen arbuioa, baina izan, eta ez dio uzten izateari, nahimen bat da!...

ese odio contra lo humano, más aún, contra lo animal, más aún, contra lo material, esa repugnancia ante los sentidos, ante la razón misma, el miedo a la felicidad y a la belleza, ese anhelo de apartarse de toda apariencia, cambio, devenir, muerte, deseo, anhelo mismo-¡todo eso significa, atrevámonos a comprenderlo, una voluntad de la nada, una aversión contra la vida, un rechazo de los presupuestos más fundamentales de la vida, pero es, y no deja de ser, una voluntad!...
