Deans-greeting

Greetings from the Dean

Belen Bengoetxea, Dean of the faculty of arts

Welcome to the Faculty of Arts and its website, where you can find information about different aspects of interest, such as the range of teaching we offer, how our faculty is run or what services we provide. Our faculty, which is based on the Álava campus, is one of the most important in the UPV/EHU in terms of both its size and the number of students and lecturers in it. It has its origins in the Faculty of Philology, Geography and History, set up in 1982.

Today the Faculty of Arts offers a wide range of training at degree and postgraduate level, in different areas of the arts, humanities, social sciences and law. Thus, seven official bachelor's degree courses are taught: English Studies, Basque Studies, Philology, Translation and Interpreting, History, History of Art and Geography and Regional Planning. Four official master's courses open up the possibility of going on to study for a doctorate: Basque Linguistics and Philology, Theoretical and Experimental Linguistics, Language Acquisition in Multilingual Settings (run in English) and Comparative Literature and Literary Studies. This range is complemented by three university-specific qualifications: that of University Specialisation in the Basque Diaspora and Translation and Interpreting in Spanish Sign Language (known by its Spanish acronym of TILSE).

Among the different qualifications, one of the faculty's priorities is to foster active teaching/learning methodologies and mobility for students, who can take part in different programmes run from this university, as well as doing external practicums in companies and institutions.

Another important feature of this Faculty of Arts is the busy research activity it carries out in different fields, reflected in the recognised research groups and projects hosted by the faculty, as well as the work of knowledge transfer and dissemination done here.

Our teaching and research make use of quality facilities including well-equipped laboratories, work spaces and classrooms.

The Dean's Office works to achieve quality university training that helps to drive and develop the humanities and social sciences. In this respect, one of our primary goals is to train professionals able to take up the challenges posed by the future in these fields of knowledge.

We hope your visit to the Faculty of Arts will be a positive, fruitful experience.
