El Dr. Garechana presta sus servicios al departamento de Organización de Empresas de la Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU) como investigador y docente. Sus áreas de interés incluyen la gestión de la innovación en las organizaciones, los indicadores de ciencia y tecnología, las herramientas de minería de textos y los métodos de evaluación científica. Forma parte del grupo de investigación TFM Research Group , realizando hasta la fecha estudios cienciométricos orientados a la caracterización de la ciencia y tecnología. Tiene un sexenio en investigación.
