Impacts of hydrocarbon extraction in the Yasuni rainforest
The current transport and energy model is based on the excessive consumption of fossil fuels. In addition to this, transnational companies make use of fossil resources that have taken 200 million years to be formed, in order to monetise resources that belong to the whole planet and are non-renewable. With the collaboration of Medicusmundi Araba and Universidad Autónoma Simón Bolivar (UASB), this project analyses the impacts of the oil industry in Block 16 of the Yasuní rainforest in Ecuador from 1999 to 2022 (24 years). The Life Cycle Assessment tool has been used to measure how the impacts are distributed during the different phases of: Extraction, Transport, Refinery, Distribution and Final Use. This analysis aims to generate the bridge between the end USER of the hydrocarbon and the IMPACT of its use, in order to help generate direct responsibility, while involving the agents that have participated in a lucrative way in the whole process.
