Definition and Objectives
In comparison with the traditional focus on the production step, life cycle thinking aims at understanding the environmental, economic and social impacts of a product or service over its entire life cycle, i.e. from the raw materials extraction to its ultimate disposal (passing through manufacturing, distribution, use and recycling). In this framework, our work is devoted to the determination and understanding of the environmental impacts through the entire life cycle of diverse materials, processes and technologies. The information resulting from these studies helps to identify the environmental hotspots during the entire life cycle, allowing a conscious choice of preferable solutions towards sustainability. Using holistic methodologies such as life cycle assessment (LCA), we provide cues towards the design of novel alternatives with reduced environmental impact. Our research areas include novel energy storage systems, plastic sustainability, biomimicry & bioeconomy, recycling & upcycling, energy footprint analysis and circular economy studies. The Research Group operates in the Department of Graphic Expression and Engineering Projects in the School of Engineering in Bilbao (University of the Basque Country).
