Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

The PIA II subject is framed in Level 3 and belongs to Module 5 of the Degree. It is a compulsory subject and temporary annual deployment. It consists of 9 ECTS and is part of the Tutored Practices that, during the fifth year, take place at the UPV/EHU Dental Clinic.

It corresponds to the odonto-surgical activities in adults relevant to the training of the dentist. It seeks to provide comprehensive training, of an eminently practical nature, covered entirely by clinical practices, which take place over 30 teaching weeks; one day per week for 5 hours (Weeks 1-15: Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Weeks 16-30: Fridays from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.).

The evaluation of this subject will guarantee the acquisition of the relevant comprehensive competencies of the dentist.

Skills/Learning outcomes of the subjectToggle Navigation

The powers of Module 5 are defined by ministerial order CIN/2136/2008. All the competencies of the module have been developed and specified in the learning outcomes described below:

General competencies:

G022- Have the ability to make an initial diagnostic judgment and establish a reasoned diagnostic strategy, being competent in recognizing situations that require urgent dental care.

G023- Establish the diagnosis, prognosis and adequate therapeutic planning in all clinical areas of Dentistry, being competent in the diagnosis, prognosis and preparation of the dental treatment plan of the patient who requires special care, including medically compromised patients (such as diabetics , hypertensive, immunosuppressed, anticoagulated, among others) and patients with disabilities.

G028- Acquire clinical experience under appropriate supervision.

Specific competencies:

M05CM01- Pre-professional practices, in the form of a dental clinical rotation and with a final evaluation of skills, which allow the incorporation of professional values, care communication skills, clinical reasoning, clinical management and critical judgment. They must include clinical work of the student in adult patients of all ages and conditions, in an integrated manner and under adequate supervision.

Learning outcomes:

PIA II1. Face the complexity of dental care for an adult patient by identifying the most important ethical, social and psychological aspects in each case.

PIA II2. Establish correct intercommunication with adult patients, their families and with their own colleagues, working with them as a team.

PIA II3. Perform a clinical history and physical examination following a protocol that includes the most important symptoms and signs at the oral-dental and general systemic level, indicating and/or performing the relevant complementary tests in each case.

PIA II4. Establish an adequate diagnosis of the most common and relevant oral pathology associated with an adult patient and issue a prognosis for it.

PIAII5. Choose, reasoning your selection, the most predictable and relevant dental therapeutic and preventive measures to restore oral and dental health in an adult, applying them in each case in a planned and sequential manner within a multidisciplinary approach and based on the cultural and socio-cultural situation. patient's economy.

PIAII6. Acquire practical experience and clinical skill by applying the most common dental treatments in adults to patients.

PIAII7. Implement the most appropriate preventive measures in each case to maintain good oral health in the adult patient.

Theoretical and practical contentToggle Navigation

It aims to integrate sufficient and necessary knowledge so that, reflected in a correct clinical history and examination, it allows establishing an individualized diagnosis, inferring a prognosis and establishing a treatment plan. It comes in 4 blocks:

-Clinical history and examination in adults.

-Diagnosis and prognosis in adults.

-Comprehensive treatment in adults.

-The prevention and maintenance of oral and dental health in adults.

It will be developed through pre-professional practices, in the form of a dental clinical rotation and with a continuous evaluation of skills, which allow the incorporation of professional values, care communication skills, clinical reasoning, clinical management and critical judgment. They must include clinical work of the student in adult patients of all ages and conditions in an integrated way and under adequate supervision.

The practices will be carried out in person at the UPV/EHU Dental Clinic. This activity will be done in groups, joining the care activity within the work hours described previously.

MethodologyToggle Navigation

Teaching sessions whose objective is for the student to learn skills, attitudes or applied aspects of the theory in the presence of real patients, which require very small groups.

As it is an eminently practical subject, it integrates into its teaching everything that the student has been learning in the other disciplines of the Degree; The student must reflect all those theoretical teachings that he/she has received systematically in previous courses on real patients.

The students will work in pairs in a box at the Dental Clinic, rotating the roles of dentist and dental assistant. Once the patient's clinical history and examination have been completed, the diagnosis and sequenced treatment plan have been established, the student must meticulously review how to perform each procedure before undertaking it on the patient in clinical practices. Likewise, she must have all the necessary material prepared and organized in her work box for each treatment scheduled that day.

She must strictly comply with all safety protocols and guidelines set by the Dental Clinic and the Center.

Ordinary Call: Orientations and DisclaimerToggle Navigation

“In accordance with UPV/EHU regulations: Students will have the right to withdraw from the evaluation call before the start of the 5th academic week, in which case a NOT PRESENTED will appear in their final grade.”

The continuous evaluation will be carried out through detailed monitoring of the student during the clinical practices by the teacher/tutor/s. In addition to technical or psychomotor aptitude, the following aspects will be assessed: Knowledge, Hygiene, Attitude, Organization of clinical practice and Final quality of the work.

Within the attitudinal section, special attention will be paid to aspects related to the student's oral and written communication during clinical practices. The teaching staff will evaluate a series of criteria to determine the technical skills that the student uses to communicate with patients (or family members if necessary), with other health professionals, laboratory technicians... The evaluation of said competence may represent 10% of the grade.

The proposed calendar gives clinical practices the majority of the student's dedication to the PIA II subject; Therefore, it is proposed that their evaluation has a decisive nature: a failure in clinical practices will mean a failure in the final grade.

Attendance at practices is mandatory; Therefore, the third lack or absence thereof without justification leads to failure.

The teaching function of PIA II consists of guiding the student during the integration of the contents of the previous subjects of the Degree, as well as its execution in real situations on adult patients.

All Tutor Teachers will rate their students in the cognitive, psychomotor and attitudinal areas. In the usual case in PIA II, that more than one Professor tutors the same group throughout the academic year, the weighted average of the final grades of all the Professors who have given him/her will be established as the final grade for each student. Taught clinical practical teaching during the course.
