Description
This course introduces students to the particularities of the spoken language used at scientific conferences and congresses. Particular emphasis is placed on the scientific style of the talks and the importance of properly communicating both the ideas and the results obtained. Notions on the proper use of visual support systems such as presentations and slides will also be provided.
Results
By the end of the course students will have acquired the facility to make oral presentations in a proper manner, being able to convey all the important information on the work conducted
Assessment systems
Evaluation will be performed immediately by means of control of attendance and the preparation of a sample scientific talk. The topic will be optional, but it is recommended that it should be related to the studies conducted by each student to facilitate the incorporation of these tools into his or her daily tasks.

Description
This course introduces students to the particularities of the written language used in scientific journals. Particular emphasis is placed on the scientific writing style and the importance of properly communicating both the ideas and the results obtained.
Results
By the end of the course students will have acquired the facility to write articles properly, generating texts which are easy to understand and able to convey all the important information regarding the work conducted.
Assessment systems
Evaluation will be performed immediately by means of control of attendance and the preparation of a sample research paper drawn up in English. The topic will be optional, but it is recommended that it should be related to the studies conducted by each student to facilitate the incorporation of these tools into his or her daily tasks.

Description
This course covers the main features of RefWorks, how to import records from different sources, how to generate bibliography lists in different styles and how to create quotations in Word documents and share group records.
Results
At the end of the course students will know the main sources of information with which they will be able to conduct bibliographical research work.
Assessment systems
The control procedure will be conducted by the university services which teach the activity, which will be responsible for issuing a report for each student. This report should be included in the doctoral student activity document for review by the tutor, the thesis director or the Academic Committee.

Description
This course introduces students to the search for patents on different national and international databases, the appropriate wording of the request and knowledge of the formalities necessary for the registration of a patent.
Results
By the end of the course students will understand the procedures and formalities necessary for applying for a patent, as well as knowing how to view the main databases related to patents. They will also have sufficient knowledge to write a patent application.
Assessment systems
This course will be taught by staff from the Research Results Transfer Office (OTRI) of the University of Malaga, which will be responsible for issuing a report for each student.

Description
This activity will cover techniques to improve the organization, structure and style of academic papers, at written document level and in terms of the skills required to make oral presentations in public.
Results
In this activity the students will acquire a collection of knowledge, skills and attitudes which will be useful to them for interpreting and producing messages and communicating effectively in different contexts.
Assessment systems
This activity will be reflected in the doctoral student activity document and reviewed by the thesis director.

Description
Depending on the available funding, all students will be expected to complete the following: - A three-month stay at a prestigious research centre in another country, conducting research topics related to their doctoral theses. The thesis director and, if appropriate, the tutor, must submit a detailed report to the Academic Committee of the Program regarding the appropriateness of the centre where the stay will be performed, the topic to be covered, the duration of the stay and its funding. - Attendance at international congresses for the presentation of their work and peer discussion. - Stays at companies with which there is a signed agreement. Students will be assigned a tutor for the stay. - Attendance at training activities included in the doctoral program which are organized at a university different from the one it belongs to.
Results
The objectives of the stays will be, among others, to promote knowledge of the research program of the host centre, improving the research skills of the students and improving international relations. To encourage the students' active participation in the congresses they attend they should accredit the presentation of research results (oral communication, posters, etc.).
Assessment systems
After the stay or the attendance at a conference students must report the work completed during the stay in their activity documents. This report should be included in the doctoral student activity document for review by the tutor, the thesis director or the Academic Committee.

Description
This course provides conceptual and methodological tools for qualitative and quantitative research.
Results
By the end of the course students will be familiar with the methodology and research techniques which will be useful to them for proposing a work program and systematizing data collection and analysis.
Assessment systems
This is an optional activity offered by the Doctoral School of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia with a transversal nature for all the programs. This activity will be reflected in the doctoral student activity document and reviewed by the thesis director.

Description
These seminars mostly present advanced topics within the lines of research of the program which have been developed at other institutions, complementing and extending the vision of the professors.
Results
By means of this activity, the students will become familiar with new techniques, mechanisms, procedures, etc., in their respective lines of work, which will often be useful to them when monitoring and putting into perspective the originality of their contributions.
Assessment systems
Evaluation will be performed immediately by means of control of attendance and the active participation of the students in the subsequent debates and, in the case of the short courses, the drawing up of a short summary report focusing on what the student's tutor deems appropriate.
