Next generation wide bandgap based multiphase drive system for electric vehicle applications (MultiphaseWBG). PID2020-115126RB-I00

Period:
from 2021 to 2024
Financing entity:
Ministry of Science and Innovation
Description:

The overall goal of the project is the integral development (hardware, modulation and control) of innovative power control unit based on WBG semiconductors and fault tolerant multiphase rare-earth free PMa-SynRM technologies for the automotive sector, with a higher energy density, optimization of losses, operation at high switching frequencies and high fidelity fault tolerant control modes.

As a summary, the specific topics of this project will focus on: 1) the integration of new generation wide bandgap semiconductor devices capable of operating at high switching frequencies and high temperatures, 2) the incorporation of specific driver circuits, 3) research into fault-tolerant control strategies, which will fully exploit the additional degrees of freedom of star-connected PMa-SynRM machines, including novel power converter and resolver failover control (sensorless operation), 4 ) research in advanced control and modulation techniques (focusing, especially, on high-speed operation and optimization of efficiency) and 5) the design of an optimal power module through a new die positioning paradigm, which It will allow a considerable reduction of the parasitic inductances, improving the general operation of the power converter. As a result, it is expected to present a complete power electronics solution for application in the next generation of High Speed Electric Machines (HSEM) for the automotive industry, in vehicles with highly simplified cooling systems and limited spaces for the installation of components.
