Asier Blas Mendoza

Curriculum Vitae

Asier Blas-Mendoza has a degree and a PhD in Political Science and Administration from the UPV/EHU. With several collaboration grants, he worked in the University Guidance Service, bringing the university closer to secondary school students and helping to orientate UPV/EHU students. Since 2002, he has been a member of the Parte Hartuz consolidated research group, first as a pre-doctoral researcher and since 2006 as a lecturer in the Department of Political Science and Administration of the UPV/EHU. Between 2007 and 2012, he was the department’s Academic Secretary and its Director from 2018 to 2022. He was a member of the following: the PhD Political Science and Administration Committee; the official Master's degree in Governance and Political Science; and the Master's degree in Participation and Community Development. He was the Head of the latter for three years. Between 2013 and 2016, he participated in the Academic Committee of the International Election Observation and Electoral Assistance Postgraduate Studies and was its Director during the 2015/16 academic year.

His main lines of research: comparative politics (models of democracy and electoral and party systems); the management of ethnic-national diversity (power-sharing, federalism and secessionism); international politics; and democratic innovation (citizen participation). He has been a visiting lecturer at Vytatutas Magnus University in Kaunas (Lithuania) and at Ivane Javakhishvili State University in Tbilisi (Georgia). In 2012, he won the 10th Manuel Giménez Abad Prize for research work on political and territorial decentralisation for his work Modelos de democracia en las Comunidades Autónomas españolas. In addition to this book, he has dozens of academic publications; the most recent one that stands out is the paper “Implementation performance in the field of the EU Customs Union: consequences of differentiated policy implementation on customs control efficiency” (2023, with Mikel Erkoreka). Outside the strictly university sphere, he contributes to various media.
