THEORETICAL CONTENT



1. INTRODUCTION TO GEOLOGY. Concept and definition of Geology. Geological disciplines and their relationship with other sciences. Fundamental principles: actualism. Geologic time. Relative chronological scales: fossils. Absolute chronological scales: radiometric methods. The geologic timescale.

2. STRUCTURE OF THE EARTH. Physical properties of the Earth: internal energy, volcanism and seismicity. Terrestrial magnetism. Structure and composition of the Earth: crust, mantle and core. Lithosphere and asthenosphere. Earth materials. Minerals: composition and physicochemical properties.

3. PLATE TECTONICS. Lithospheric plates and their boundaries. Basic process: the Wilson cycle. Causes of lithospheric plate movement. Deformation and orogenesis. Earthquakes and volcanoes. The rock cycle. Changes in sea level and climate change. Biogeography and Evolution.

4. INTRODUCTION TO PETROLOGY. Igneous rocks: mafic and felsic rocks, intrusive and extrusive. Sedimentary rocks: detrital and chemical rocks. Geobiological processes. Biosedimentation. Metamorphic rocks: contact metamorphism and regional metamorphism.

8. GEOMORPHOLOGY. Initial and sequential landforms. Fluvial geomorphology. Karst relief. Marine morphology. Glaciers and Pleistocene ice sheets. Aeolian geomorphology. Soils: concept, structure and composition. Agents of soil formation. Pedogenic regimes. Marine geology: coastal and oceanic. Deep-sea sediment.

9. GEOLOGY OF THE BASQUE-CANTABRIAN BASIN. The Paleozoic and the Variscan Orogeny. The Mesozoic and the opening of the Bay of Biscay. The folding of the Pyrenees and sea withdrawal. Recent times. Geodiversity and Geological Heritage.

10. NATURAL RESOURCES AND HAZARDS. Renewable and non-renewable resources. Sources of materials: ore deposit types. Energy sources. The hydrological cycle. Use of resources and current environmental issues. Natural hazards. Climate and climate change.

Lab sessions:

1. Identification of minerals.

2. Identification of igneous rocks.

3. Identification of metamorphic rocks.

4. Identification of sedimentary rocks.

5. Types of fossilization and paleontological techniques.

6. Identification of Precambrian and Paleozoic fossils.

7. Identification of Mesozoic and Cenozoic fossils.

8. Interpretation of topographic maps.

9. Interpretation of geological maps.

10. Interpretation of geological cross-sections.



Fieldtrips:

1. Basics of Field Geology I.

2. Basics of Field Geology II.

Master classes: active teaching methodologies will be used to work on the theoretical content of the course.

Lab sessions: unaided visual study of minerals, rocks, and fossils. Interpretation of topographic and geological maps.

Fieldwork: in situ observation of classroom content (theoretical and practical).

This is a continuous evaluation method as stipulated in Chapter II, Article 8, Paragraph 2a.



Parts of the evaluation:

- Written test (40%):

Mid-course exam (20%)

End-of-course exam (20%)

- Exercises performed in the lab (20%).

- Exercises performed in the field (10%).

- Teamwork (30%).



The final grade is the sum total of the individual scores attained in each evaluated part. However, if a score of less than 5 is attained in any evaluated part the candidate receives a fail.





Opting out

Application of current regulations: Article 8.3 and Article 12.2.



This is an end-of-course evaluation method that consists of a theoretical exam (60%), an exam of laboratory work (25%), and an exam of field work (15%).



During the examination the "Protocol on academic ethics and prevention of dishonest or fraudulent practices in assessment tests and in academic work at the UPV / EHU" will be applied.
