Gaizka Durana received the B.Sc. degree in solid-state physics in 1999 and the Ph.D. degree in engineering in 2008, both from the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), Bilbao, Spain. His Ph.D. work received a European acknowledgement and focused on the experimental and numerical analysis of fundamental aspects of light propagation in multimode optical fibers. He is currently an Associate Professor with the Department of Communications Engineering, University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). His current research interests include the manufacture of specialty polymer optical fibers, and the design, development and application of fiber-based optical sensors.
