Susana Cristobal is IKERBASQUE Guest Professor in the Physiology Department of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of the Basque Country and Professor of Biomedical and Clinical Sciences, Cell Biology and leader of the Environmental Proteomics Group of the Linköping University School of Medicine, Sweden.

Her research interests have focused on the development of a proteomics-based method for evaluating human and environmental health. She was one of the pioneers in the development of a proteomics-based method for the assessment of marine pollution. She introduced environmental proteomics for the biological monitoring of ecological disasters, such as large oil spills at sea. Her lab also continued to explore the risk of new pollutants emerging from the nanotechnology revolution. She has developed a proteomics-based method to characterize proteins adsorbed to nanomaterials. She has introduced proteomic and proteogenomic analysis of unsequenced sentinel species such as Mytilus edulis for ecotoxicoproteomica. It has recently implemented a proteomic-based method that can impartially identify all target proteins of a bioactive compound, or chemical mixture, as part of the European ERA-NET-MB project, CYANOBESITY, and to evaluate the mechanism of action of EDCs in the project. Eu H2020 GOLIATH, has introduced the systematic analysis in the proteome of zebrafish embryos of the interactions between proteins and chemical compounds for its applications in toxicology.

She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Swedish Academic Consortium for Chemical Safety (2021-), a member of the Board of Directors of the Swedish Society for Mass Spectrometry (2017-), President of the Linköping University Mass Spectrometry facilities ( 2012-16), and member of the board of Stockholm University (2008-10). She is a member of the management committee of Eu COST actions CA20106 and CA17140 and previously FA1002, FA1402, CA15135.

She is actively involved in EU associations promoting excellence for women in science, founder of a “peer-to-peer” group for women in science.
