Maite Pelacho :)

I graduated in Physics from the University of Valencia and obtained a research qualification in Environmental Engineering from the University of Zaragoza. I have a Master's degree in Philosophy, Science and Values from the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU.

I am currently completing my PhD within the Doctoral Programme "Philosophy, Science and Values" at the University of the Basque Country UPV/EHU. My doctoral research revolves around two central ideas: a better understanding and management of citizen science, together with a vision of knowledge -scientific knowledge in particular- as a commons. I approach the latter concept from the perspective of political economy - starting from the pioneering work of Elinor Ostrom - thus considering it as a common resource vulnerable to social dilemmas, which can be successfully self-managed by its community of use without the necessary intervention of the market and/or the state. With regard to citizen science, I understand it as the active participation of citizens in the research process, according to one's own interests and capacities, which are always dynamic and dependent on one's own environment. I am particularly interested in knowing the conditions for achieving a citizen science that, on the one hand, favours the constitution of science as a commons and, on the other, is also understood and managed as a commons.

Since 2007 I have been actively collaborating with the Ibercivis Foundation for Citizen Science, where I work as a researcher and project manager.

My research interests include, among others: governance of science, philosophy of science, political epistemology, ethics in science, scientific and civic culture.
