Dr. Aitor Benedicto García is professor of the Cell Biology and Histology Department since 2015. He finished his international thesis in 2014, in which he studied the contribution of immune system cells and tumor stroma in the development of hepatic metastasis of colon cancer. During the PhD, he carried out a 4 month stay of at the ICAHN School Of Medicine at Mount Sinai (New York, EEUU), to deepen the role of the liver myofibroblasts during metastasis in this organ.
He has participated in several projects to evaluate the role of stromal cells in drug resistance, as well as their role in tumor development and the influence of the immune response. Currently, it is focused on analyzing the role of stromal cells in chemoresistance, to identify possible therapeutic targets for the treatment of cancer. In parallel, it analyzes the antitumor immune response to identify mechanisms of immunosuppression mediated by extracellular vesicles. With this aim, he carried out a 3-month stay at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles (CHLA) to analyze the role of these vesicles in the creation a welcoming milieu for tumor cells.
