Juan Luis Larrabe Barrena is an Industrial Engineer from the Faculty of Engineering Bilbao, in 2002 he obtained his PhD. Since 1994, he has worked at the University of the Basque Country/Euskal Herriko Unibertsitatea in different academic positions. First at the Higher Technical School of Nautical and naval machinery and currently at the Faculty of Engineering Bilbao, as Associate Professor. His academic and research experience is focused on the areas of electrical engineering, power electronics and naval electrical machines, as well as Marine vehicle dynamics and biomedical engineering. He also has experience managing R&D projects in these fields.
He has participated in more than 30 projects from different calls: SAIOTEK, ETORGAI, CENIT, UPV/EHU, etc. Among all of them, the leadership in the HIBRIBUQ project stands out, formed by a consortium of 8 companies in the naval sector. In this project, a hybrid propulsion system with high energy efficiency for small and medium displacement ships was developed. He was also part of the research team of the BAIP2020 project, Intelligent Multipurpose Autonomous Vessel for Fishing 2020, a consortium of 21 companies and 28 research groups led by Astilleros Murueta
He is the author/co-author of some scientific articles and communications to congresses in national and international forums. He has also participated as an evaluator in different international journals, such as IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. He is the author of two patents, both in the field of biomedical engineering.
