The objective of this course is to understand the basic principles of Chemistry, for their application to solve Engineering problems. Moreover, Chemistry is the base of the knowledge that will be acquired in upper courses of the corresponding degree

TOPIC 1. GENERAL CONCEPTS ON CHEMISTRY. Introduction. Chemical reactions, chemical equations. Stoichiometry of the chemical reactions: limiting reactant, excess reactant, purity of a reactant, reaction yield. Aqueous solutions. Reactions in aqueous solution. Concentration of the solutions.
TOPIC 2. STRUCTURE AND STATES OF MATTER. The atom and electronic structure. Periodic table. Chemical bonding. Intermolecular forces. States of matter (states of aggregation). Changes of phase of pure substances. Liquid-vapor equilibrium
TOPIC 3. TERMOCHEMISTRY. Chemical reactions and energetic changes. Heat, specific heat and heat capacity. Enthalpy and enthalpy changes of chemical reactions. Calorimetry: at a constant volume and at a constant pressure.
2nd PRACTICE. Calorimetry
TOPIC 4. chemical equilibrium. Rate of reaction: activation energy, rate expression and factors that affect the reaction rate. Spontaneity. Chemical equilibrium. Factors that affect chemical equilibrium: Le Châtelier’s principle.
TOPIC 5. ELECTROCHEMISTRY. Galvanic or voltaic cells. Standard electrode potentials. Spontaneity of redox reactions. Nernst equation. The influence of concentrations on the electromotive force of a cell. Electrolytic cells. Faraday’s law. Corrosion. 4. PRACTICE. Electrochemistry (Galvanic cells or batteries.
TOPIC 6. SOLUTIONS AND COLIGATIVE PROPERTIES. Solubility. The effects of the temperature and the pressure in the solubility. Coligative properties.
TOPIC 7. ORGANIC COMPOUNDS. Isomerism. Important chemical reactions. Saturated, unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons. Polymers.

Ordinary examination session: the final mark is divided on the following percentages:
70 % Final exam
20 % Laboratory activities
10 % Individual tests along the semester
Extraordinary examination session:
Final exam (100% of the mark) in order to prove the knowledge and skills of the course.
