Abstract
In contemporary naturalistic approaches to culture, all seem to agree that culture is a matter of transmitting "something" from generation to generation, and intra-generationally, by non-genetic means. The debate centers in what is that "something", how is transmitted and why seems to show certain stability in time. My aims are a) to present the main actual approaches and overview their origins; b) to argue that these approaches are mainly item-centered; and c) to point to their main limitations.
