Graduated in Biology (1980), and shortly after hired assistant professor in the Faculty of Sciences of the UPV / EHU (1981). By then he had already taken his first steps in the field of terrestrial gastropods, and together with his research group he carried out several works and projects on the distribution and taxonomy of the malacofauna of the Iberian Peninsula. PhD (1988) in Animal Biology, he is a full professor of the Faculty of Sciences since 1992. He has described two new species for science. The Basque Parliament awarded the Munibe Prize to its research team in 1992. Since 1978, he has been a member of the Basque Summer University (UEU), where he was the director of 1991-95. Vice-dean of Euskara of the Faculty of Sciences of 1991-1994. He was appointed corresponding academic of Euskaltzaindia in 2003. In 2009 Juan Zelaia essay prize. In 2016 he received the CAF-Elhuyar Award for Merit for his work in culture and science in Basque. Euskadi Literature Prize in 2018 (Essay in Basque). He has published numerous books, but his favorites are: Folin markesa: marraskiloak eta euskaldunak uharte galduan (Elhuyar, 1998), Armand David, pandaren aita (Elhuyar, 2001), Etxepare, Aldudeko medikua (Euskaltzaindia/ EHU, 2006), Darwin geurean (Juan Zelaia essay prize; Pamiela, 2010), Arnaut Abadiaren zoo ilogikoa (Pamiela, 2011), Back to Leizarraga (Pamiela, 2015), Patagoniara Hazparnen barrena (Euskadi Literature Prize; Pamiela, 2017), and Duvoisin kapitainaren malura (2018).
