Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

The History of Spain and the Basque Country in the 20th century is a compulsory subject in the 2nd year of the Sociology Degree. It offers a frame of reference on the recent past in Spain and the Basque Country, which will serve to place in historical perspective the knowledge acquired in other subjects of the degree. It also provides a historical culture necessary to understand today's society.

Skills/Learning outcomes of the subjectToggle Navigation

Generic and transversal competences of the 2nd year of the Sociology Degree:

1. Analyze and interpret the structural processes that define contemporary society.

2. Analyze and interpret sociologically the sections that constitute the daily experience of individuals and the meaning that these individuals attribute to them.

3. Analyze the main schools of sociological theory and evaluate their explanatory capacity.

4. Apply the basic methods and techniques (quantitative and qualitative) of social research.

5. Develop and acquire a critical attitude to social problems.

6. Explain and adequately manage the concepts, techniques and statistical sources applied to social reality.

1. The political system of the Restoration and its crises. Primo de Rivera’s Dictatorship.

2. Socioeconomic modernization and political pluralism in the Basque Country during the Restoration.

3. The Second Republic.

4. The Civil War.

5. The struggle for autonomy. The first Basque Government.

6. A long post-war period: economic autarchy and political repression in the first Franco regime.

7. From developmentalism to the crisis of late Francoism.

8. From dictatorship to democracy: the Transition and Basque autonomy.

9. The socialist period and the integration of Spain into Europe.



MethodologyToggle Navigation

The lectures will dedicate to the explanation of the course syllabus, which the students will complete with the reading of the manuals included in the basic bibliography. Classroom practice will consist of watching historical documentaries, commenting on historical texts and explaining how to write reviews and academic papers in teams.

  • Tools and qualification percentages:
    • Written test to be taken (%): 60
    • Realization of Practical Work (exercises, cases or problems) (%): 10
    • Individual works (%): 30

Ordinary Call: Orientations and DisclaimerToggle Navigation

Mode of evaluation: The course material covers class notes, bibliography, historical documents commented in class, readings to elaborate recensions.



Mixed evaluation for both the ordinary and extraordinary exams.



The final exam of the course will consist of some questions of the syllabus and a historical document to comment. Its value will be five points out of ten in the final grade.

The practical part of the course consists of some exercises: the commentaries of documents and the review of some historiographic texts. The overall value of the practical part will be five points out of ten in the final grade. If any exercise of the practical part has been copied, the grade of the whole practical part will be zero.



In order to pass the course it is essential to achieve a three out of ten points in the exam grade.

The grade of the practical part will also be considered in the extraordinary exam.



The orientations will be the same in the ordinary and extraordinary call.

At the beginning of the course, the professor will provide the following materials through the eGela:

- The syllabus of the subject, with the development of the syllabus, the basic bibliography (manuals) and a specialized bibliography. In addition, the mode of evaluation of the subject will be specified.

- Some documents on the History of Spain and the Basque Country in the 20th century, which will be commented in the classroom practices.
