Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation
The course builds on English I and is organised around a selection of texts, exercises and listening and speaking activities aimed at helping students gain a command of the English language that enables them to communicate effectively in maritime contexts. It is a 'basic' course which helps students develop their analytical and communication skills and improve their independent learning strategies.

Ship motions
Distress, urgency and safety messages.
Radio communications: Radio conventions
Navigation: equipment. Handing over the watch.

Helicopter rescue
Communications with the coast-guard; reporting an incident

- Final official exam: 70% Students must PASS the final exam in order for the marks from the continuous assessment tasks to be added to the final grade. Continuous assessment tasks: Oral presentation (15%) Written assignment (15%) (%): 100

Assessment will be based on two continuous assessment tasks and a final exam that will take place during the official exam period.
Weightings:
Final exam: 70%

The University’s Code of Ethics for preventing and dealing with academic fraud applies.
Students who wish to appear as "No Presentado/Ez Aurkeztuta" must indicate so in writing to the lecturers within the deadline established in the UPV/EHU's regulations for asessment.
Students who wish to opt out of the continuous assessment, and hence be assessed solely on the basis of the final exam, must indicate so in writing to the lecturers within the deadline established in the UPV/EHU's regulations for assessment.
This course includes practical sessions used by the Directorate General of the Merchant Marine to attest the attainment of part of the competencies linked to the GMDSS General Operators Certificate (GOC), as indicated on the Bilbao School of Engineering webpage.
In order to pass the course, it is therefore an indispensable requirement for students to have attended, in person, to have completed, and to have successfully passed, at least 90% of the practical sessions linked to the aforementioned certificate (except for force majeure circumstances to be analysed on case-per-case basis), detailed dates throughout term being specified on the course planning.
Should such requirements not be met, the maximum possible grade the student may obtain is 4.5.

The extraordinary exam will consist in an exam that includes all the contents covered during the course.
