He joined the Faculty of Sience and Technology of the UPV/EHU in 1989, where he is Professor since 2003. His full research and teaching activity has been evaluated positively (5 six-year and six five-year terms, respectively) and includes the direction of three PhD theses. Scientific activity includes publication of ca. 50 indexed science articles and participation/direction of ca. 20 research projects. Administrative responsabilities include services as Departament Secretary (2003-2006), Department Director (2006-2013) and participation in several PhD thesis and faculty position boards in Spanish universities.

His teaching and research relates to mountain-building processes, with emphasis in the deformation of rocks at elevated temperatures and pressures in deep settings of the continental crust or the upper mantle. His published scientific contributions have focused on the application of a varied set of techniques (field Geology, structural analysis, optical and electronic microscopy, petrophysics, seismology, among others) to the study of sutures in the 600-300 Ma old orogens of western Spain. He has also coauthored basic research and applied studies on the structure of the Mesozoic and Tertiary sedimentary rocks that form the western prolongation of the Pyrenean mountain belt.
