Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

The subject consist of an introduction of the structural systems and elements employed in building, from the typology and structural behaviour. In order to do this, it is shown the concept of structural security and the loading that buildings have to support, described in the binding regulations.

Different building foundation typology, structural systems based on reinforced concrete and steel structure and their structural elements are explained and described. Also resistant mechanisms and the design criteria that they must fulfil and their principle of calculation and sizing.

This subject contributes to the development of knowledge and abilities to apply the basis of Strength of Materials to the performance of real solid, like foundation systems and elements and structures in building. Moreover, the aim of this subject is to gain the knowledge and capacities to the structural and industrial building calculation and design.

As this subject is optional the goal is to introduce basic concepts.

Skills/Learning outcomes of the subjectToggle Navigation

Ability to develop projects and advanced studies in the field of mechanical engineering , with a high degree of autonomy.

Ability to develop structural projects and industrial buildings.

Knowledge and understanding of the technologies used in the construction of buildings.

Ability to design and calculation structural elements in different building types .

Knowledge and understanding of the technical standards of structural materials used in construction.

Knowledge and understanding of structural systems in construction.

Ability to design and resolution of construction details, used in steel and concrete structures.

ITEM 8. DESIGN AND CALCULATION OF STRUCTURES

MethodologyToggle Navigation

Computer practices: STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS OF STEEL STRUCTURE FRAMES

The aim of computer practices is to obtain stress, moment and displacement diagrams in a steel structure under various load cases.

Seminars: UNDERSTANDING THE OPERATION OF STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS AND SELECTION OF THE OPTIMAL SOLUTION FOR A BUILDING

The objective is to approach the students to the reality of the behaviour of certain structural elements. In order to do that, the characteristics of the common materials in elements of structural systems will be shown in the building laboratory. Also the different methods for the characterization of properties and bearing capacity of those materials will be shown.

In another seminar, it will be posed the resolution of the reasoned conception for an industrial building, in a determined environ conditions and knowing the requirements and characteristics that must be fulfilled.

Ordinary Call: Orientations and DisclaimerToggle Navigation

Personal works are voluntary.

The final grade for the course will be that obtained in the final exam. Optional works will be proposed along the development of the subject, that will have a maximum value of 20 % in the final grade.

Extraordinary Call: Orientations and DisclaimerToggle Navigation

The final grade for the course will be that obtained in the final exam. The evaluation of the optional work may be taken into account and added to the exam, only during the corresponding academic year.
