Description and Contextualization of the SubjectToggle Navigation

Social Psychology for Social Work is part of the module named “Processes and issues. around social work” (Module C – 36 ECTS ) along with other subjects, such as: Philosophy and Social Work (first course), Anthropology and Social Work (first course), Psychology for Social Work (first course), Sociology and Social Work (first course).



It is an obligatory subject taught in the second year during the second term in Basque, Spanish and English languages. It is a 6-credit subject, including a total of 150 hours distributed in 60 hours of classroom activities and 90 hours of out-of-class activities. Teaching of this subject belongs to the Department of Social Psychology and Methodology of the Behavioural Sciences.



The course includes the following contents around social psychology: the reciprocal influence between individuals and groups. Common sense and scientific knowledge. Application of the scientific method to the study of psychosocial problems. Description of research and evaluation designs. Information processing and making social judgements (heuristic biases). Beliefs and attitude change: Attitudes and Behaviour. Individuals within groups: psychosocial processes affecting group functioning, performance and decision-making. Relationships among groups. Prejudice, stereotypes and discrimination. Personal defence strategies to stigma and prejudice.



This subject is part of the project nr. IKDi3-23-01 authorized within the Call for projects 2023-2024 of Innovation IKDI3 of the Vice-rectorate for Innovation, Social Commitment and Cultural Action (UPV-EHU), resolution of 2-May-2023. The subject is oriented to the cooperative and dynamic learning model IKD (UPV-EHU Agreement, April 2010).

Skills/Learning outcomes of the subjectToggle Navigation

1. Knowing the psychosocial perspective of the main processes and elements shaping human behaviour in the social area and the relationship between the person and the environment (MO3CM01)

2. To apply the knowledge of social psychology and the scientific method to the study of psychosocial problems, differentiating common sense from scientific knowledge (MO3CM06)

3. Knowing how to analyze the psychosocial processes involved in interpersonal information processing, impression formation, and perception, in order to be able to detect and evaluate interpersonal conflicts.

4. Identifying attitudes, stereotypes and social prejudices, as well as, formation and change mechanisms, and their influence on personal and social identity in order to be able to apply them in the prevention and diagnosis of social needs of groups at risk of discrimination and social exclusion (MO3CM05)

5. To develop the capacity for self-knowledge, being able to identify ones own values, attitudes and cognitive schemes, and empathy in order to be able to analyze the future professional practice in an objective and/or respectful manner (MO3CM07).

Topic 1. Social psychology: Relationship individual-group-environment. Motivation and information processing basic principles. Contributions of social psychology to social work.



Topic 2. Methodology in social psychology: Common sense and scientific knowledge. Basic research design and evaluation in social psychology.



Topic 3. Social psychology and culture: Culture and cultural dimensions. Transcultural psychology. The concept of Self. Communication styles.



Topic 4. Social cognition: Impression formation. Attributional processes. Biases, heuristics and causal attribution.



Topic 5 Attitudes: Structure, evaluation, functions and attitudes-behaviours relationship. Elements in persuasive communication. Combinatorial attitude change

models.



Topic 6. Group processes and inter-group relations: Social facilitation.

Social loafing. Deindividuation. Group polarization. Group thinking .Social identity, personal identity and self-esteem. Prejudice, social discrimination and new forms of prejudice and racism. Coping strategies to manage social stigma.



Topic 7. Stereotypes: Definitions and functions. Processes and mechanisms:

self-fulfilling prophecy, ilusory correlations, etc. Sexism and prejudices against ethnic minorities: change strategies.



Topic 8. Applied social psychology: Health and psychosocial factors.

Dimensions for subjective well-being. Happiness and Mental health. Psychosocial factors: personality factors, Stress and Social support. Coping strategies (individual and collective) and health.





MethodologyToggle Navigation

The evaluation system will be continuous, so class attendance is required.

In this subject different methodologies will be used:

- Theoretical, in-class, presentations.

- In- class practice: Group work. Audiovisual material watching and discussion.

- Computer Practice: using social psychology evaluation questionnaires and knowing how to gather and analyze the data, paper presentation. Assistance to class and participation are mandatory.

To pass this course the student must pass the written part.

"Etengabeko ebaluazioaren kasuan, azken probaren pisua bada irakasgaiko kalifikazioaren %40 baino handiagoa, nahikoa izango da proba horretara ez aurkeztea azken kalifikazioa "aurkezteke" izan dadin. Aldiz, azken probaren pisua bada irakasgaiko kalifikazoaren % 40 edo hori baino txikiagoa, deialdiari uko egin nahi dioten ikasleek kasuan kasuko irakasgaiaren irakaskuntza aldia bukatu baino, gutxienez, hilabete lehenago egin beharko dute eskaria. Eskari hori idatziz aurkeztu beharko zaio irakasgaiaren ardura duen irakasleari.

3.- Azken ebaluazioaren kasuan, azterketa egun ofizialean egin beharreko probara ez aurkezte hutsak ekarriko du automatikoki kasuan kasuko deialdiari uko egitea" (12.2 art.).



Ebaluazio ez-presentzialaren kasuan, ebaluazio jarraituaren aukerarako ehuneko berak mantenduko dira, baina ikasgaiaren lan, ebaluazio-proba edo aurkezpen guztiak modu birtualean egingo dira (Egela, BBC Collaborate, beste plataforma birtual batzuk).
