Zuriñe Baña is an associate professor in the Department of Immunology, Microbiology and Parasitology at the Faculty of Science and Technology (FST, UPV/EHU). She is part of the Marine Microbes research group, linked to the FST and the Plentzia Marine Station (PIE-UPV / EHU).

Her research activity has focused on the field of microbial ecology, mainly marine microorganisms. Up to now she has studied the chemical communication and the protozoan-bacteria relationship, the diversity of microbial communities in aquatic systems, the activity and function, and the composition and transformation of organic matter by microorganisms. In recent years, she has investigated the impact of global warming on the functioning of microbial communities and its repercussions on the biogeochemical cycles of marine systems. Recently, she has oriented her work towards the field of marine microbial bioprospecting. Specifically, she is in the search for new compounds of biomedical and biotechnological interest, and in the search for new metabolic capacities such as the degradation of microplastics, hydrocarbons or other environmental pollutants.
