Admission criteria

Profile for admission

The ideal profile for admission on this programme is of someone who is interested in researching about the design, preparation and applications of new materials, who is interested in playing a part in solving major fundamental technological challenges in the field of sustainability, and in making the most of the ample opportunities available in this area.

To access this programme, you must have a qualification in sciences or engineering. Priority access will be given to those students who have completed the Interuniversity Master's Degree in New Materials at the UPV/EHU and the University of Cantabria. Access may also be given to candidates who have another official master's degree qualification that accredits an equivalent level of training in the field of Material Science, and which ensures the student will have the necessary skills to be able to prepare a doctoral thesis in one of the lines of research included in the programme. Given the essentially research nature of doctoral studies, students who cannot prove they have a minimum of 20 ECTS credits in research training will not be given access to this Programme.

XSL Content

This programme does not establish specific training supplements, however, it is considered that it can be accessed by Degree or Bachelor Degree graduates, with at least 300 ECTS, whose studies may not include a specific content in research training, and the Academic Committee of the programme shall decide for each admitted student, depending on the admission profile, whether or not there is the need to acquire this research training. The training will be acquired by performing between 5 and 15 ECTS in subjects of Official Masters Degrees offered by the UPV/EHU in the field of materials or other equivalent training in terms of research competencies, in which students will enrol, advised by their tutor or Thesis director, once they have enrolled in the Doctoral Programme.Additional training to be carried out depending on the degree of origin, in cases where the Master¿s degree in New Materials or other of similar features has not been completed:Degree (Degrees and Bachelors Degrees): Chemistry, Physics, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Materials Engineering -Synthesis and processing of materials (4 ECTS) -Characterisation of materials (4 ECTS) -Other degrees -Introduction to Materials Science (4 ECTS) -Synthesis and processing of materials (4 ECTS) -Characterisation of materials (4 ECTS)
In the event that the number of students who meet the previously established requirements for access to the Doctoral Programme in Materials Science and Technology exceeded the maximum established, the following aspects will be considered:1. Adequacy of Master studies made with regard to the requirements of the Doctoral Programme: 40% Completion of the Interuniversity Master¿s degree on New Materials (University of the Basque Country, UPV / EHU, and University of Cantabria) will provide the highest score. For candidates who arrive from other Masters, the training acquired will be valued and they may achieve the highest score in the case of Masters completed on similar subjects.2. Academic record of the Degree/Bachelor¿s Degree/Engineering: 15%3. Academic record of the Master: 10%4. Additional training: 10% Being the holder of other Masters or Degrees directly related to the subject of the Doctoral Programme will be an asset. 5. Previous research experience: 7% Having performed practices at companies, stays in research laboratories, knowledge of instrumental techniques related to materials science will be an asset.6. Scientific publications and communications: 10%7. Personal interview: 8% Students¿ motivation to complete the doctoral thesis and their ability to work in teams as well as their willingness and availability for stays at other Research centres during the completion of their doctoral thesis will be an asset. In addition, proficiency in English and / or Basque will also be considered.

Procedure for assigning a faculty member as a doctoral thesis tutor and director

Once a student has been accepted onto the doctoral programme, the Academic Commission will assign them a tutor from among the faculty at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) participating in the programme, who will then be responsible for ensuring good interaction with the Academic Commission and adapting the training and research activities to the principles established by the programme and the Doctorate School.

Within three months of enrolment, the Academic Commission will assign each student a thesis director from among the faculty participating in the programme. The director may or may or not be the same person as the tutor, and will be responsible for guiding and ensuring the consistency of the training and research tasks, and guaranteeing that the topic of the thesis have an impact and make a novel contribution to the field. They are also responsible for guiding the thesis plan and adapting it, if required, to other projects and activities in which the PhD student is involved.

If the director is not a member of the faculty at the UPV/EHU, the tutor will act as a liaison.

Doctoral theses may also be co-directed, and the second co-director may or may not be a member of the DP.  New tutors or directors may be assigned at any moment during the thesis.
