Doctoral Programme in Biomedical Research

Nested Applications

Presentación - Investigación Biomédica

The doctoral programme in Biomedicine Research is an adaptation of the program with the same name that had been offered by the Departments of "Physiology" and "Cell Biology and Histology" from the UPV/EHU since the course 2010/11. The program aims to create awareness and train specialists in the field of biomedical research to be able to do good science, improve research in Biomedicine and transfer this knowledge to society for their use.

This doctoral programme is made up of 3 research teams who develop their work in line with the following:

1. Lipid metabolism and free radicals in physiopathology

Their activity here focuses on the role lipids and free radicals play in physiological processes and in human pathologies (liver regeneration process, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, cancer and infertility). They use approaches such as lipidomics and biomarkers of oxidative stress associated with the disease.

2. Biology of development, tissue regeneration/repair, cancer and genetic diversity

Here the research focuses on the molecular and cellular mechanisms of the processes of differentiation and apoptosis, migration and invasion of germ, embryonic and cancer stem cells. They study the development of modulation strategies for the process of tissue regeneration/repair, organogenesis and alterations in embryonic development, the efficacy of neuro-protective strategies to prevent brain damage and human infertility through the use of animal models. They also research into human genetic diversity associated with complex traits.

3. Physiology of reproduction, development, ageing and cancer, and cardiac eletrophysiology

These lines of research come under the field of Physiology: in the study of fertility, tumour biology, neurotransmission and brain neuromodulation, of how lifestyle habits (diet and exercise) affect ageing, and in the regulation of cardiac potassium channels.
