Summary:

THE AIM OF THIS PhD THESIS IS TO ANALYZE A TYPE OF PRESS KNOWN AS THE FEMININE PRESS, AIMED SPECIFICALLY AT WOMEN. THE MAGAZINES STUDIED ARE WOMAN, ELLE, MARIE CLAIRE, TELVA, DUNIA AND COSMOPOLITAN, PUBLISHED BETWEEN JANUARY AND JUNE 1995. THE METHODOLOGY APPLIED IS WHAT JACQUES KAYSER REFERRED TO AS "MORPHOLOGY DU QUOTIDIEN" AND WHAT JOSEP MARIA CASASUS CONSIDERS TO BE "STRUCTURAL HEMEROGRAPHY", WITH THEIR FORM AND CONTENT BEING CONTEMPLATED IN STRUCTURAL ANALYSES. THE RESEARCH STARTS OFF WITH THE BELIEF THAT - SUBSEQUENTLY PROVEN - THE EDITORIAL CONTENT OF THIS PRESS IS NOT AS MODERN OR UP-TO-DATE AS ITS MORPHOLOGY IMPLIES. THE ANALYSIS IS ACCOMPANIED BY A STUDY OF THE ILLUSTRATED PRESS, CONSIDERED TO BE A PRECURSOR OF THE FEMININE PRESS, AND BY AN INTRODUCTION TO THE SITUATION OF THIS PRESS ON THE INTERNATIONAL SCENE. SPECIAL ATTENTION IS DRAWN BY THE AUTHOR TO THE SITUATION OF THE FEMININE PRESS ON THE SPANISH MARKET IN WHICH INTERNATIONAL PUBLISHING GROUPS SUCH AS ELLE, VOGUE AND COSMOPOLITAN ARE STARTING TO WORK.
