Summary:

Daily photojournalism from the point of view of the socio-semiotic model of communication - this being understood as a mass communication phenomenon and as such structured around three main phases: production, circulation and consumption.
The first chapter provides a detailed description of the model, adapting it to the singularities of the medium. Thus, in addition to taking into consideration the political and economic conditions under which it is developed, an in-depth analysis is then provided of the communications industry in terms of its productive organization, with special attention being paid to the construction of its organization chart and the flow of productive routines, and in terms of the nature of its communications products, the construction of which is supported by the techno-communicative features of the medium themselves and by the discursive strategies of the company as a collective destinator.
As far as circulation conditions of the photojournalistic phenomenon are concerned, the communicative ecosystem in which it is developed is taken into consideration, with special attention being paid to those that may be deemed to be its direct competition. The features of the technological intervention required are studied in order for the primary substance - the photography of the event - to be transformed into a communicable product via the pages of the daily newspaper.
Following this section involving basic research, the instruments generated in it are then applied in the specific case of photojournalistic production in the daily press in the Basque Country between 1978 and 1992.
Three five-year periods elapse between the time when the first daily newspapers of reference during the democracy became established (El País, Diario 16 and El Periódico de Catalunya) and the nationalist newspapers in Euskal Herria (Deia and Egin), and the advent of the  widespread use of colour on the pages of the daily newspapers - the consequence of a shift towards the visual press that constitute alternative types of reading.
