Summary:
This thesis analyzes the presence of Euskara (the Basque language) in the bilingual contemporary nationalist press. To this end, both the most relevant socio-linguistic literature about bilingualism and all aspects related to the six publications subject to study have been analyzed. Once the available information was gathered, we then examined the presence of Euskara in them, reaching the following conclusions: the weight of articles expressing opinions written in Euskara is greater than is customary in normalized languages, which is due to the under-use of the Basque language when writing news articles; articles in Euskara are very often confined to Basque-related themes, which is a way of condemning Euskara to a type of ghetto - this conclusion is reinforced by the trend towards placing such articles in certain sections; moreover, such articles are of little relevance; lastly, in the publications subject to scrutiny, the Basque language has always been in a situation in which its presence has steadily decreased in all and every one of these publications, all of which leads us to conclude that the model of a bilingual press is a blind alley for the Basque language, whereby we are committed to laying the foundations of a communications medium that is entirely in Euskara.
