The aim of the subject Vital Cycle I is to provide nursing care to the mother and the child. Therefore, the subject is divided into two parts: the first one is related to mother cares, where the student will learn the main characteristics of the health of the woman during the fertile stage; the second part deals about children cares, where the main characteristics of the healthy child and teenager, as well as the main disorders, will be considered.



Learning outcomes:

The student will be able to: identify the different stages of the sexual development. Learn the process of pregnancy. Recognise the different phases in the development of the child and the teenager, as well as the main disorders that can appear in each phase. Develop a nursing care for each situation.



Grading: writing examination 60%, seminars and teamwork 40%

1. Overview of maternal and paediatric nursing care.

2. Puberty and menstruation. Menstrual disturbances; Menstrual cycle & sexual response cycle.

3. Family planning: Nursing process for assisting the couple to choose a contraceptive method.

4. Pregnancy:

Maternal adaptation during pregnancy: Signs of pregnancy, physiologic adaptation to pregnancy, psychological adaptation to pregnancy.

Prenatal care: The nursing process for prenatal care, Nutritional requirements.

Pregnancy at risk: Diabetes mellitus, TORCH, Hyperemesis gravidarum, Placenta previa, Abruption placentae, Hypertensive disorders in pregnancy, Blood incompatibility

5. Labour and birth:

Labour process; Pain management during labour and birth; The nurse’s role during each stage of labour.

6. The postpartum woman:

Maternal adaptation during the postpartum period: Physiologic adaptation, Psychological adaptation.

Nursing process for the early postpartum period

Nursing process for preparing the postpartum woman for discharge

Postpartum woman at risk: Postpartum haemorrhage, Mastitis, Thromboembolic disorders.

7. The normal newborn:

Nursing assessment of newborn transition: Physiologic adaptation, Nursing assessment of the normal new born

Newborn nutrition

The nursing process

8. The newborn at risk:

Gestational disorders: The small-for-gestational age newborn; The large-for-gestational age newborn; The preterm newborn; The post-term newborn.

Acquired disorders: Respiratory disorders, Haemolytic disease of the newborn, Newborn of a diabetic mother, Newborn of a chemically dependent mother, Newborn with a congenitally acquired infection.

Congenital disorders

9. Health promotion for normal growth and development; Vaccination program in the Basque Country.

10. The child with a major illness: The child with neurologic disorders; The child with respiratory system disorders; The child with acute leukaemia; The child with gastrointestinal disorders; The child with diabetes mellitus; The child with genitourinary disorders; The child with musculoskeletal disorders; The child with communicable diseases of childhood.
