The research group is constituted by personnel from the Department of Pharmacology of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU). Its main scientific interest is the neurochemical study of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease.

Nowadays, the Neurochemistry and Neurodegeneration Research Group participates in projects to analyze proteins and lipids which have pharmacological interest applying some innovative techniques as Imaging Mass Spectrometry (IMS). The members of the group also have experience in the study of several neurotransmitter receptors both in human brain in the presence of various diseases and in experimental animals.

These studies have been performed using techniques like radioligand binding assays in brain membrane homogenates, receptor autoradiography, immunohistochemistry, western blotting assays and behavioral tests to evaluate memory and learning in rodents.

The main research line has been focused in the study of some biochemical and cellular modifications that occur in the Central Nervous System in neurodegenerative processes. Basically cholinergic and lipid mediated neurotransmission, such as endocannabinoid neurotransmission, are studied, and their relationship with memory and learning processes. Moreover, their alteration in Alzheimer disease is studied. The analysis of the different modifications it is performed in postmortem brain tissue of Alzheimer's Disease patients and in subjects which don't have any neurologic or neuopsichiatric diseases. Additionally animal models are used either in vitro or in vivo for the analysis of parameters neurochemical processes involved in memory and learning.

Secondly, the group develops new tools for the neurochemical and pharmacological study of the samples, such as the technique of imagin mass spectrometry (IMS), that nowadays it is been used as routine technique for the analysis of both lipids and other biomolecules.

The Neurochemistry and Neurodegeneration Research Group participates very actively in the training of researchers by supervising researching works, Degree research projects, Master research projects and Doctoral Thesis.
