Graduated in Biochemistry (2004) and Doctor in Physiology (2009) at the UPV/EHU, Nerea Subirán has been working as a teacher since 2009 in both Biochemistry and Physiology field. She has an extensive international career having completed her training at the Institut de Biologie et Médicine Moléculaires (IBMM)/Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), Instituto de Investigaciones Químicas de Sevilla (CSIC, Spain), University of California, Irvine (USA) and at the University of Birmingham (England).



She leads the Human Reproduction Laboratory beloning to Consolidated Group of the Basque University System. She supervised 5 doctoral theses (2 with international mention). She is co-author of 20 scientific articles, 2 books and nearly 50 contributions in national and international congresses. She has 2 six-year periods recognised by the CNEAI and 1 five-year teaching period. Her research is focused on basic-clinical studies about molecular mechanisms underlying the physiology and physiopathology of the fertile capacity of human spermatozoa and on the epigenetic impact of environmental factors on gametes and embryo quality.



She is the Founder of the university Spin Off MEPRO Medical Reproductive Solutions SL, set up for developing new strategies to give a global solution for male and female fertility problems. Awarded with Toribio Etxeberria Award to the best business idea in 2018. MEPRO develops medical devices to improve sperm selection during assisted reproduction treatments
