PhD at the UPV/EHU in 2008. That year published his first journal article as main author, with the functional characterization of two proteins that control developmental transitions in filamentous fungi. After two research contracts at the CIC-Nanogune (2008) and CIB-CSIC (2009), and an EMBO fellowship (Univ. Karlsruhe, Germany), he continued as a contract researcher at the UPV/EHU, with funds of the University (2009-2011) or Ministry of Science (2011-2013). From 2013 to 2018 served as Assistant Professor and is now an Associate Profesor at the Faculty of Chemistry.

Since 2008, Etxebeste has published 29 articles and reviews in scientific journals and a book chapter, all of them in the field of cellular and molecular biology of fungi, and the analysis of the activity and dynamics of transcriptional regulators that control development. The quality of these works was acknowledged with cover images of the journals Microbiology (2009), Trends in Microbiology (2010) and Genetics (2015). He has participated as principal investigator or researcher in UPV/EHU, Plan Nacional I+D+i and Basque Government projects.

Currently, Etxebeste teaches two topics of degree in chemistry at the UPV/EHU (12 ECTS credits per year) and another one in the Master's degree in chemistry and polymers (3 ECTS credits per year). He has supervised, in addition, six master's works, fifteen final degree works and three PhD projects since 2012.
