Electro discharge machining

Electro Discharge Machining technology is also present in the CFAA, as EDM is perhaps the most widespread representation of non-conventional machining technologies.

Despite historic reticence towards EMD technology in the aeronautical sector, there are already several operations performed using this technology, and future applications of EDM are promising in this aspect. Therefore, constant research in new generators that produce less thermal damage to the workpiece is necessary.

The new centre has two machines that utilize EDM technology. One incorporates Sinking-EDM, and the other employs Wire-EDM. Both machines manufactured by ONA, one of the founding members of the CFAA.

  • Sinking-EDM machine ONA NX7: It is the larger of the two machines, and it has a high capacity for a large volume of work. It has a dielectric tank that is 2.3 meters in length and can deal with parts weighing up to 10 tons.
  • Wire-EDM machine ONA AV35: It is smaller in size, with a dielectric tank that is 1 meter in length and a capacity of up to 1500 kilograms per piece. It allows working with wire diameter between 0.07 and 0.33mm, both coated and uncoated.
